- Firstly follow the water to find the leak. The two problems may not be related. Assuming the radiator you bought was new, here are you possible problems/solutions. Radiator cap is a possibility. This will be apparent if you chase the leak. If you waterpump is begining to fail, you will generally have water coming from a small hole at the base of the snout where the drive pulley is (on most cars). The only way a hose can affect the ability of the cooling system to function is if the lower hose collapses when running. Check to see that this is not happening. If it is, replace the hose and make sure that the new hose has the wire coil inside to prevent this from happening. You may also have a thermostat problem. If the thermostat does not open, you will definately overheat. You cannot always check it with this method, but a good indicator is to feel the upper radiator hose before and after starting the engine (when warmed up). Before starting the engine, the hose should be fairly flexible and easy to squeeze. After starting, and being warmed up, it should get fairly stiff due to the flow going through the hose. Don't forget that the hose will be over 200 degrees, so be careful.

The belt broke and she took it in to get it replaced and they told her metal from the pully that broke got into the water pumpand they have to replace that to? - No that's a bunch of b.s. if the pulley was broken you be able to see it- and in order for it to get in the pump- it would have to be leaking somewhere- water pumps put out a lot of pressure... But as long as the jeep never overheated before the belt broke the water pump is fine- my opinion, find a new mechanic...

- Okay, Adam, we also have a well and just put in a new one. The setting that says System means that the water is running through the filter. The setting that says by pass means that the water is NOT running through the filter. You will have water either way in your house (or you should). It is just either, it is running through the filter, or it is not. I hope I have helped. gram

- You did not say how many miles your 2004 Corolla CE currently has? We have owned 5 Toyotas from brand new and 211,000 miles is the most mileage we have gotten was on a 1993 Toyota Camry that did require radiator replacement. However, one of the more expensive preventive maintenance expenses requires replacement of Timing Belt every 75,000 to 90,000 miles when it also makes sense to replace Water Pump, Thermostat and both fan belts etc in one overhaul saving on expensive labor and normally being worry free of any breakdowns. If you are not overheating (meaning Temp Gauge runs normal) then I would say 1st Mechanic was just to put wool over your eyes but still one should always watch observe temperature gauge while vehicle is in operation and never run or drive if HOT <= put over to side of road and if recurring then carry gloves/bottle of water and see a good trustworthy mechanic. - What you want is called a sump pump. Most have a system built into them that is triggered by rising water. The idea is to have a hole beneath that allows the inevitable water that will collect a place to go, then when a certain amount gets in the hole, the sump pump comes on and pumps it out to wherever you have the hose or pipes ran to. Being underground, good luck keeping the humidity level down. It won't be easy, and much depends on where your natural water table is, and what it is during rains. Someone in your area might know all that, I don't.
