- Q: I noticed my car was quot;in the redand was about to overheat as i was driving, so at first I thought maybe i needed more coolant. I turned off my car and heard a fan noise under my engine for like a minute then it stopped. I checked the radiator and it was empty (no coolant) so i put water in there to get to the store to buy more coolant. By the time i bought some the water was already gone (this was only like 10 min) so I put the coolant in drove home again i noticed i was overheating, i checked again and all the coolant had leaked out too..it was all gone, that QUICK! So i asked a couple of men about it, and they say it sounds like it could be a hose or either a water pump. I don't know which it is, i can't drive it anywhere b/c it keeps overheating and i don't want to get it towed for $75 just to get a new hose. So is there a way i could tell what the problem is? Thanks!
- Yes - look for the leak!!!! With the car off, look for stains on the radiator, or puddles of greenish fluid anywhere. If you see puddles, look for the hoses/connections above them. If you see a stain near the water pump mounting on your car, you are likely having a water pump issue (or a hose clamp has worn a hole in one of your hoses mounted to the pump) If you don't see anything, add water to your car, and look for immediate leaks. You should see something. Check under the car for puddling. Turn off the car and immediately check under the hood - many times your coolant will remain pressurized long enough to continue leaking after its shut off for a little while.
- Q: I have a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE. It has 4 cyl. and it has 98,000+ miles on it. I took it in to get the oil changed and they inspected the car for a noise it was making. Found out the water pump was gone and the timing belt was worn. Need replacement on both. They quoted me 670.00 for the repair! STEEP! The part should cost about 20.00 max. How do I replace the water pump myself? And the timing belt? Do I need special tools? If I can't do it pretty easily myself, how much should I pay for the repair? I'm not made of money, but I need my car to run to get me to work everyday! I can't afford much, so anything around 200-300 is probably the most I can spend on the repair. What should I do?
- The best thing you could do is maybe run to a library and they might have a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual you can make some copies of, check it out and decide for yourself, but a timing belt is a pretty involved process, not so much for a water pump.

- Ummm I kind of agree and disagree with C-tech. the 96 Voyager came in one of 3 four cylinder engines, 2.2.L 2.5L or , 2.5L turbo, I think the 2.6L was discontinued in the late 80's or around 91. And the water pump is driven externally, Just look under the alternator and you will see it. So remove the alt, remove the bracket then unbolt the whole pump/pump housing assy, then unbolt the housing from the pump. Clean the surface where the o-ring seals the housing to the block, Run a bead of silicone on the cleaned housing to pump surface, bolt together (dont glob on the glue) Install the housing to the block with a new o-ring, and finish the assy.And to even make sure you have a 2.2 or 2.5 right where the thermostat goes, the head has a housing cast on the head there is a galley plug. Slightly tighten then remove the plug, pour in the coolant ( in the radiator)water mix (50-50) install plug then run engine, what for fan to kick in, then wait for fan to shut off, set your level in the reservoir and BAMM your done. And where I do agree with C is when MBZ owned Chrysler and had the 2.4 installed, somewhere in the 00, but I dont know, I quite Chrysler in 99 And if its a 2.6 get a mechanic to do it

- most cars, it is in the front, driven by the timing belt. If you are going to replace the pump, replace the timing belt also (if there is one), as it's probably overdue, and you have to remove it to get at the water pump. Also the tensioner. Replacing the timing belt is a difficult task. If you screw it up, you could damage the engine. .

- Well, you have to have a mixer valve if your temps are over 140F If I understand you correctly, you could put your mixer valve on the gravity fed hot water and then the output of the mixer valve goes to the inlet of a pump that can handle 140F. Then you don't need a mixer on the hot water tank in the house. And finding a pump that can handle that temp will be a lot easier. Also, storing high temp water is very inefficient. The higher the delta Temp is from the water to the ambient surroundings, then the lower the efficiency. You could save just as much energy in the water by increasing your water tank size and lowering your temp. For instance a 100 gallons of water close to boiling has the same stored energy as 150 gallons of 140F water. And you don't need a mixer at that point and you don't need a special pump either. I'm assuming you are using storage on the roof with a thermosyphon? Can you add more water storage next to that one?

- Q: I have a 1997 15hp Mercury 2-stroke outboard. When I run it it runs great and does what i want it to do. However, sometimes it doesn't pee. I can still hold my hand in the stream when it does but its very very hot. It always pees when i run the motor WOT but when im just chugging along it goes out for a bit and then comes back on. Is this supposed to happen? I was told by my dad that the thermostat regulates the pump so that it doesn't cool the engine down too much. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated
- The telltale, or pee as you called it, should run all the time. It should never stop while the boat is running. You probably do need a new water pump, also called an impeller pump. I would not run this boat again until this is fixed or you could risk an overheat. The impeller is just a rubber or plastic blade, looks like a gear, that wears out over time. Every few years they should really be replaced although a lot of people don't change them until they act up.

- Q: Iv got a 2002 Chrysler Sebring with a 2.7 in it and recently it started leaking coolant, its been determined that i need a new water pump. Iv gotten quotes from various places and various prices but there all telling me i need to replace different things. One guy said i need a timing kit, the other guy said i dont need a timing kit but need valave covers and a couple other things, another said i dont need anything but the pump itself. Im lost and the leaks getting worse and i need to make a decision but dont know what to do. Some insight from you helpful people would be great!
- In Your Vehicle The Water Pump Is Run by the Timing Belt. If It Has been Leaking It Will have Contaminated the Timing Belt, Which Has to be Removed Anyway To Replace the Water Pump. So Replace Water Pump, Timing Belt and Tensioner And Coolant. It is Also Recommended To Replace the Thermostat At This Time.
