I do know about cars and can perform general maintenance, I am not totally ignorant to whats going on underneath the hood of my car I'm just not sure if I have the tools needed and how difficult it is to do. - It's not hard, just time consuming. You will need BOTH metric and standard size sockets deep sockets and/or wrenches. For the tensioner pulley you only need 18mm closed-end wrench and you can pull upwards on the tensioner to release tension on the belt. Use a brand new water pump. Do not EVER use a remanufactured water pump. With a new pump you will have a lifetime warranty from any of the popular brand name auto parts stores. For the water pump the battery being disconnected is not required. That is required depending on the car you're working on, but on a 5.0L Mustang it's not. Be sure to stop by Walmart or parts store and pick up a tube of Permatex Blue RTV. Apply a thin bead of RTV on the gasket mating surface then put the gasket on. Don't do this until you're ready to put the pump on. Be sure to use a good scraper to remove old gasket material from the gasket mating surface of the timing cover. DO NOT USE A TORQUE WRENCH ON WATER PUMP BOLTS ON A 5.0L MUSTANG. These bolts are very hard to find now. You only need to snug them at first and then hand tighten them. The factory bolts are notorious for corroding and becoming stuck in the block after their heads snap off. Do not turn the bolts too quickly and be sure to clean them off with a wire brush if they have ANY corrosion and spray them with lubricant before reinserting.

- They vary in price but at the right auto parts counter you might find a brand new or rebuilt water pump for about 75 bucks or so but no more then about 160 bucks.The labour on those takes a few hrs anywhere from 4 to 6 hrs or less all depends on the tools and the mechanic. Check around for the part and the labour costs and sometimes it's better when it's a job like this that will cost at least a good 275-400 in labour costs plus taxes to have the shop supply or sell you the part bec then the shop truly should warranty the part via their part supplier and warranty their own labour work too.Also some shops here in Canada charge from 69 to 89 an hr or higher but there are also some shops that will offer a flat rate for work done by them too.So if you have a shop wanting 80 an hr and to charge for 6 hrs or more they could end up charging you well over 600 bucks just for the labour alone. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you do end up deciding to fix that vehicle there could be some shops in the local smaller towns that might offer you the lower rates due to them being family operated or owned etc and I'd try to find a shop that has done lots of that same vehicle make work.

- I am going to think your fan is working and switch. If they changed the water pump, they might have broken some debris or sealant that is clogging your heater intake hose or heater core. I would start with finding the intake and return hoes for the heater core and back flush the heater core. Did this to my old truck and the heater worked really good after that. You did not say what year the car was does it have its own belt for the water pump? is that in working order? GL

- A lot of the pumps for RVs do cause a slight sputter, Try compleatly filling the water tank, then turning the pump on,. Allow a few minutes to build up pressure and fill the hot water tank, If the sputtering slows, or compleatly stops, your ok. You have to remember that a lot of after market pumps don't work quite as well as an OEM pump. If it's a real bad sputtering, You might need to return the pump.
