- Q: 1995 Ford Contour GL, 2.0L 4Cyl- three water pump failures. I bought the car in 2000 [49,000 miles] and in 2003 [116,000 miles] a leak from the weep hole area was repaired by replacing the pump. In October, 2005 [164,000] another leak from the same place was again repaired by replacing the pump. Just over two years later now, 196,000 miles, and today it's leaking from the same area. Any idea why this would happen? Each time I've replaced the pump, I've not been able to see any damage to it. People talk about impellers breaking, but they've always seemed intact. Maybe it isn't a pump failure so much as a leak for some other reason? Since purchase, the car has run what appears to be hot, in that the temperature gauge, when at operating temps, is only a tick or two from overheating, but since it's in the normal range, I've always assumed it's just a faulty thermostat. It's never overheated except for when the leak has sprung up.Any thoughts? :)
- You could have a pulley that is bent or out of balance. Maybe your cooling system needs to be flushed and its putting a little extra load on the pump. You can check the temperature with an infra red thermometer to tell what the actual temperature of your engine is, then you'll know if your gage is accurate.

- Water pumps are available in different types. 1. Centrifugal type: Operate by increasing the velocity of water which, when the velocity is decreased by the Volute casing, the pressure increases. 2. Rotary Gear type.: Operate by Displacement of the water by rotating, gears that trap water between the teeth of 2 rotors of inter-meshing gears that release the water at a higher pressure on the opposite side of the pump to the intake. 3. Piston (reciprocating type: Also a displacement operation by a piston moving backwards and forwards within a cylinder (like a hypodermic syringe in operation). Back stroke takes water into the cylinder and forward stroke discharges it at a higher pressure. (Double acting types are also used that take in and discharge alternately from both ends).

- Please get the workshop manual. From an imperfect memory it should be in forward gear to expose a link - but I could be confusing it with other brands. This brand has a known issue with the water pump if ever run dry as both the impellor and the housing can be damaged instantly. The pump should always be replaced as a full assembly, housing, seals and impellor, as detritus can easily block water galleries and that requires extensive work to remediate. The thermostat should be checked and replaced at the same time. Worn and damaged impellor material can easily end up through the block, head, thermostat etc. and that must be checked for as well. The lower cylinder can be down on compression caused by local overheating due to this and mud, sand and corrosion reducing water flow. An engine that very much must be flushed and looked after after all use - that includes all the larger models with this brand. They are quite a good engine, but seem very heavy for the output to me - particularly compared to lifting a two stroke on and off....

- Q: have a leak and want to replace the pumphave tools, any thing I should know before getting started?I intend to:drain from lower hose of radiatortake of fan ( using a 1 1/2 wrench method)do I need to remove shroud first???remove fan, remove serpentine belt then remove water pump , use a little brake cleaner to clean new pump gasket area and existing engine area, put a little gasket sealer on gasket and replace pump.put everything back on, and refill with prestone Green coolant.its what is in there now and it says dextrol only but is that necessary?, most people in the know I ask say it does not matter...hows that sound?
- Sounds like your ready to work, it should only take about an hour. Yes take the fan shroud off first (just the top part), you should get a piece of card board and put against the radaitor to keep from damaging it when you take tha fan off. You can use Prestone, Dextrol is just GMs name brand.

- HOW MANY MILES! This is a TOUGH CALL because a CONTINENTAL TIMING KIT for a HONDA is about $200 with NEW WATER PUMP PULLEYS and and BELT! A HIGH MILEAGE HONDA from taht year may bend a few VALVES if the belt breaks BEFROE you repalce it! Thsi wil requrie a NEW HEAD GASKET and a few new VALVES! AT this time NEW VALVE SEALS can be installed! An independent shop can do ALL THIS for about $1400-1500! he BELT KI is like waht I said here! OTHERWISE use ONLY GENUINE HONDA PARTS int here! teh CONINENAL kits are GREAT and made to HONDA PRECISION as well! PULLEYS and ENSIONERS are involved in thsi process, and only GENUINE HONDA COOLAN should be used ONLY! NO PRESTONE! Stay away from VALVOLINE OIL as well, it is made by WAX REDUCTION METHOD!

- Well, you will have to pull the belt for the car. Most likely will have to pull the alternator, power steering, ac compressor, and many other parts that are in the way. On an scale from one to ten and ten being the hardest, 4. If you have minimal knowledge, mechanic time.
- Q: I have coolant leaking out and i'm pretty sure now that it is the water pump. Question can water pumps leak even if the cars not running?Like a steady drip every two seconds? - I have a 94 grand am with the 3.1 v6 and really it's an easy job, it looks harder than it is. The biggest thing is getting the serpentine belt off.
