Q: was told by a Toyota Service that this would only be 1 hour more labor and cost me about 140 dollars more..and that they always recommend it being done same time as timing belt and water pump replacement....but is really a good idea or not? (if engine is 20 years old..but has ony 150 ,000 miles on it..btw. this is for a 94 Toyota 4 Runner V6 engine
Do not use that shop again. There's more work than that involved in doing what they say they can do in an hour. I have never had those recommendations for any of my Toyotas that were serviced regularly.
Q: i replace all the seals on the water pump reinstalled it and the same thing happened... it leaks out the bottom some where and run down the water pump and down the hot side radiator hose... any ideas?
look up the torque spec's in either a hayne's/chilton's manual, or online to see if you have it tightened correctly, and using some high-temp RTV on both sides of the gasket before you install it should help. most auto part stores have torque wrenches to rent for a day. Also, there may be a certain order you have to tighten the bolts down.
Q: I live in a house that uses a pump to push water from a tank to the bathroom and kitchen. It has a sensor that detects if water is flowing and pushes it much harder. Recently, it has been pushing the water for a second or less then it completely stops for a while. It's like a pulse of water then nothing. Can anyone give me feedback on what is wrong here? Thank you.
from okorder :Self-priming pump working principle is: the pump before you start in the pump shell filled with water (or) from the water in the pump housing.Start after high-speed rotating impeller flow to the vortex in the impeller, shell, then the entry form the vacuum, the inlet non-return door open, within the air into the pump suction tube and the impeller, to arrive at the outer edge.Self-priming pump is a self-priming centrifugal pump, it has compact structure, convenient operation, stable operation, easy maintenance, high efficiency, long service life, and have strong self-priming capacity, etc.Line does not need to install the bottom valve, only to ensure storage in pump body before work are quantitative liquid.Pump after the normal starting, impeller liquid of suction chamber and inlet line of air suction, and can completely mixed within the impeller, the function of centrifugal force, and liquid with gas to the vortex flow volume outside edge, the impeller has a certain thickness is formed on the outer edge of the white foam belt and high-speed rotating liquid ring.Gas-liquid mixture into the gas-liquid separation chamber through diffusion tube.At this time, due to the flow rate suddenly drops, lighter gas is separated from the mixture of liquid and gas through the pump body spit continues to rise. After degassing of liquid to liquid storage chamber, and the reflux hole again into the impeller, and impeller with inhalation of gases from the inlet line again mix, flow under the action of the high-speed rotating impeller and the impeller outer edge....As the process cycle, decreasing the air in the suction line, until all gas absorption, complete the self-priming process, pump put into normal operation. What you said phenomenon should be pipeline leak, which leads to the self-priming pump process is repeated.
Q: I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier the head gasket is shot[i think] checked thermostat and checked for clogs, flushed system, noticed bottom of radiator is cold but top is hot, is water pump shot?does not wiggle, or did i put thermostat in backwards? Steam poors out exhaust
Well, the most common failure on a water pump is that the seals go and then it begins to leak, and drips or pours down the side of the engine. As to the bottom of the radiator being cool, bear in mind that a large number of cars and trucks have a transmission cooler or oil cooler located at the bottom section of the radiator, and that would of course remain cooler than the cooling system as the oil or transmission fluid do not conduct heat as well, not do they tend to get quite so hot. I would guess you have not gotten the thermostat in backward, as if it were never to open, it would not allow the hot coolant from the engine into the radiator against the flow of the water pump. As to the head gasket, yes, steam from the exhaust is a fairly strong indicator that coolant is getting into the combustion chamber and being steamed off. Of course, that could also be a cracked block or cylinder head or a warped head that caused the gasket to fail, but the head gasket would be the first thing to examine.
Q: I have a 1 HP water pump that will pump water through a 1 and 1/2hose. What is the approx. GPM (just to have a reference) of a pump like this?
The capacity will be limited by the pressure drop. Assume 15-40 GPM depending on the length of the 1 hose. This is provided that the 1 is then split into four 1/2 hoses. Otherwise the flow will be highly restricted by the smaller diameter. The efficiency of a small centrifugal pump is around 50%. The general water pump equation at 50% eff. is HP = GPM psi / 860. So for one horsepower the GPM = 860 / psi Therefore for 20 psi the flow is 43 GPM, at 40 psi it is 21 GPM , at 60 psi it is 15 GPM
Q: How does a pump get water from a low low elevation to a higher elevation.

Q: my water pump went bad on my 1997 chevy cavalier, causing it to leak all the coolant it had in the system. i put water in it til i could get new water pump. changed out water pump. attempted getting air out of system. put more concentrated coolant in system than i did water. bad guessing on my part. ran car around block 5 times. it was fine. this morning on the way to work, it started overheating again. my thoughts : more air in system that's not coming out? thermostat REALLY went bad at same time as water pump???? overheating all because of a little too much coolant??? for some crazy reason, my system needs to be suddenly flushed? Your thoughts? one last thing, the car has always ran perfectly normal temp til water pump went bad.
Maybe the hoses aren't connected properly and water is leaking out? Have you had the bonnet up to look at the engine while it's running to check for leaks? If you can't sort it out, take it to a garage
Q: 94 f150,302. my pump is still leaking after doin the job twice. its a new pump, the first time i used the red silicone between pump and plate, both sides of gasket, and the housing on the block. leaked. then did it again with high tack gasket cement and still leaks. i cleaned all metal both times with brake clean before installing. same with thermostat housing, small leak. ive done 100s of pumps over the years,no problems, so please no rude remarks on mechanical ability. what could it be? it leaks up front of the motor above the crossmember where ya cant actually see the leak, its not a freeze plug. bolts are torqued. any ideas ? thanks
Pay an automotive repair shop to do it. Then it is their problem. Even the best technicians need help once in a while. Yes it costs 3x as much, but no more headache for you.
Q: Im looking at putting a cabin on my property. I have a 200 gallon underground fresh water tank and i'm needing a pump to get the water into the cabin. i want to run a toilet, sink and possibly a shower. does anyone know the style of pump i would need that would only operate when i need it to that way it does not burn up.
I had a jet pump to run my whole house on my farm. It was placed in the basement, but it could be in a back room, too and they are pretty quiet these days. Does it freeze inside the cabin? I assume not. having it inside means if you have trouble even in freezing weather you can work on it in comfort. The end of the pie into your water tank will need a foot valve to keep the pipe filled so you don't have to prime the pump ( not a handy thing to have to do all the time). Other than that, the system is operated with electricity and a pressure switch which is settable. It will not run all the time this way. Not sure anymore but, for example the switch might be set to come on at 50PSI and shut off at 125PSI. You can tell by the switch or get a recommendation from the store where you buy it. (see pictures in link) Menard's sells these and department workers are trained to answer all your questions about installation, parts, and what you need, etc.
Q: We had a leak in our car and took it to get checked out. They said it is the water pump. Also that it would be around $650 to replace. I know nothing about cars. Is this necessary? and does the cost sound about right? We are going on a 3 hour trip one way this weekend. Would it need to be done before then? thanks guys!
How can we give advice on cost when you didn't tell us the year/make/model car? If the water pump is leaking, then it is a sign that the water pump is failing and must be replaced ASAP. Yes, it is necessary!! and it must be done before your trip, or you will ruin the engine.
