- Q:House has bad mains pressure, so previous owner installed a quot;Holding Tankwhich stores water from the mains, before pumping it into the house for the internal tanks. However, after some recent plumbing work when the mains was turned off, it's running a little weird. The pump seems to be constantly running, although at a very low level, and some times when the taps/fawcets are opened, they seems to be nothing for up to 30 seconds (only air), and then the water rushes out. Same thing for toilet/WC cisterns..Any advice/pointers appreciated.CheersJM
- If you are using a standard well pump, then there should be a check valve in the pipe between the holding tank and the pump. In a well it will be a foot valve, but may also have been a simple check valve. The work on your mains may have introduced dirt into the valve and prevents if from sealing and maintaining the pressure in the system when the pump stops. Someone also suggested that the pressure tank (not the holding tank) associated with the pump has become water logged. If that is the case then a small volume of water coming out of the pressure tank will cause a large enough pressure change to keep the pump working. Last possibility, there has to be a sensor that determines that the level of the water in the holding tank is low and will turn on the mains supply and when the level gets high enough that the mains supply is turned off. This can be a pressure switch or a mercury switch similar to one with a sump pump, etc. So my suggestions are: Check to make sure that the holding tank is clean and there is no sediment in it. Check to make sure that the holding tank fills when the water level drops, (it appears to stop when it is full). If you do this next procedure, make sure that you know how to prime your pump. I would also turn off the hot water tank. If it is a foot valve, remove the foot valve by removing the clamp and then back wash it to clean out the dirt. If it is an in-line check valve then remove the pipe. between the pump and the holding tank and invert it, and run water through it to clean out any sediment, then replace the pipe. Drain the pressure tank, and if you can pump some air into it. Then make sure that everything is connected, prime the pump and turn it on. Make sure that everything is working, then at each tap, especially the hot water taps, turn them on and leave running until the water flows smoothly. When all of the air is out of the system then turn on the hot water tank.
- Q:I have a 1.5 horse Power Hit and Miss engine? Is it possible to buy a water pump I could run off of the hit and miss engine that would pump water from a river over a big hill and little ways and into a water tank or is this just a waste of time. How much water could I pump at a time? A trickle or a gush of water? When I say hill I don't mean like a little hill in your yard I mean a hill you have to hike up? If you don't know are there any resources I could access? Where could I buy such a pump if there is one?
- A horse and a half won't do much. You would be better off with a hydraulic ram type pump if you can get about a 10 or 15 foot fall before the ram. It will pump about 4 or 5 times the height of the fall, but in small quantities. It will run 24/7 without gasoline, so it will fill a tank over a long period of time. The railroads used them during the steam era when they had huge water towers out on the plains.
- Q:My friend wants to buy a 90's somethin dodge avenger.( not sure what year) and the guy says the water pump is bad. Does the car have to be re timed when u replace the water pump?
- Yep, but it's not as bad as you would think, but bad enough to take a weekend.
- Q:old sbc v8 water pump from oreilly's came apart and the fan ate up my serpentine belt, power steering pump pulley, clutch fan obviously, and put 5 holes in my new aluminum radiator. What will they cover? Remanufactured limited lifetime warranty. '78 chevy k10 350 sbc
- Read the warranty carefully. I doubt they will easily admit their fault and offer to pay for damages. You might have to take them to court, but that means spending money on attorney fees, court fees, and risking losing even more. Tough luck, man.
- Q:Hello, I have a 1996 Cavalier and it's got a small coolant leak by the water pump so I figured I'd replace it. I called around a little bit and one quote was $250. I'm sord of handy and have a few hours on Saturday is it that hard? I heard it's just a few bolts? Thanks!!
- It's easy as hell. Should take about an hour, maybe 2. Depends on how 'handy' you are. Before you replace the water pump, check your hoses. Make sure it's not them that's leaking.
- Q:My water pump went out. I had a new water pump put on my accord a year and a month ago. Since then have driven 5-6,000 miles in a small city town. Does this makes sense. Could it be a cheaper water pump was put on my car and it went out. The person who worked on it is a mechanic who does a bunch of cars on the side. Last time he worked on my brakes, I had to bring it back because he put cheap ones on.Can I call this guy back? What could I say?
- usually 7-10 years so at 5000 miles take it back
- Q:I think my water pump has crapped out on my 1997 Jeep Cherokee. I have been leaking coolant for a few days now and there is a puddle under my Jeep after I turn it off and my reserve tank keeps emptying out on me. I replaced the lower radiator hose and still the same problem. It is not over heating so I am wondering if it IS a water pump problem? If it is, could I do the work myself?

- Q:i learned from wikipedia that the water pumps back to reactor where it is heated again and the cycle begins again. but then i saw this diagram
- I can see why you're a little confused. There are actually 3 separate loops in most reactor designs and you can see this in the diagram. The primary heat transport loop contains the water that touches and cools the fuel and this is the water that is pumped back to the reactor where it is heated again.... It is shown in the diagram in pink. The water from the primary heat transport loop passes into a steam generator which is full of water but the water in these two systems is kept separate to ensure all radioactivity stays in the primary heat transport loop and in the containment building. Basically the pipes from the primary heat transport system pass through a large tank of water and heat the water in the tank causing it to boil. The steam is then passed out of the generator, out of containment, and into the turbine. Next it goes into a heat exchanger which is similar to the steam generator except it is used to cool the water. The cooled water then passes back into containment and into the steam generator to be boiled again. Finally, the third heat transport loop moves cold water from either a lake, ocean, or cooling tower, into the turbine building where it cools the water in the secondary heat transport loop. This water is kept completely separate from the water in the secondary heat transport loop to ensure that if the secondary loop water somehow becomes contaminated, it doesn't pass into the third loop and get into the lake, ocean, or atmosphere. I hope that clears things up :)

- Q:I took my car to a repair shop today, cause it was overheating,After looking at it for a few minutes the mechanic told me that it was a water pump problem. They quoted me a price of $276 to totally replace itI called around to my local auto zone stores and found out that the actuall pump cost for a new pump was $39 dollars, and I can get rebuilt pumps for 19 bucks, Is it that labor intensive that it would take so long to put in a 39 dollar part for over 200 bucks labor. Is that a fair deal, or am I getting ripped off.Additional Details, I didn't let them do the job yet, I took the vehicle home and just parked it in my driveway.
- My water pump costed 505 dollars to replace because it ruined other cooling unit components when it went. There is a bit of work to it, but the make and year of the car has a lot to do with it. I had a '94 Olds that did this and with them, you have to remove several engine parts just to get to simple things, let alone the more complicated stuff. $276 is a reasonable price for this to be done at a garage. The cheaper the water pump, the lesser that quality sometimes, and it may not last as long. Good luck!
