- Q: Had my car in to the shop this morning, it's a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2. The water pump and radiator need to be replaced, and they said they can do it for $380. Is this a reasonable price? Also, if I don't get them fixed right away, am I risking a lot of permanent damage to the engine?
- that's not a bad price at all, considering the radiator is $150 or so by itself, and $50 or $60 for the water pump. So over $200 worth of parts, leaving roughly $180 for labor, not bad at all. Possible engine damage, yeah, lots of it. Blown head gasket is the most likely, a $500 repair.
- Q: mercury 9.8hp.installed a new water pump impeller and still no water circulating through engine. no blockage anywhere. now what??? i`m stumped at this point.
- I have seen this many times on 9.87.5Merc'sThere is a plastic o-ring under the power head and it is probablly melted closed. There is a way to fix it without removing the powerhead.Remove the lower unit and pull out the water pickup tube. Then use a piece of brake line 5/16th sharpen on a 45 degree angle and push up the opening for the water pickup to open the passage. This will fix your water problem.
- Q: Why my Water Pump is leaking again? It was replace 2 month ago brand new water pump?
- Surely a brand new water pump is still under warranty - - - even rebuilt ones around here come with a 12 month warranty.
- Q: How do I tell the difference between a long and a short water pump? I have a Chevy 350 V8, a crate motor the same size is going in very soon. How do I tell which one I have so that I can get the correct brackets, accessories, etc.?
- Dude's lengths are incorrect.. The short pump is 5-5/8'' long and the long neck pump is 7'' long . That's with a V belt short block chevy....
- Q: The pond is 10' long x 2' wide x 1' deep. The pump is at one end and water is raised 1' to a buried garden hose that is maybe 12' long and then at the end it goes up 2' to release the water over some rocks. I had a 330 gph pump that worked well but died. That size has been discontinued. Go smaller or bigger? DON
- Hi Don, In my point of view it depend on the final effect that you want to create. If you are in the mood of water theraphy, mean that you like to the sound of the water fall, you may want to consider a pump size that a bit higher than your previous ones, and vice versa. In a nutshell you should be able to determine the effect of the waterfall you need since you already have your previous old pump running before. This should be your best guideline to check the size of your new pump needs. There is a bit of extra caution needed if you are thinking of using a bigger size of pump, you should ensure that the pump are not sucking to fast of the water. If this is the case you might be end up having your pond drain half tank. You can get the circle time for the water flow base on the pump size from the catalog.I'm sure your hardware guy are gladly assist you in understanding the matrix conversion Pond size over the pump size, since I can't explain in detail here about the graph reading. But in most cases I just relatively using the first option of comparing the old pump size with the new one. Hope that help. Fazla
- Q: can this happen that pump is pressurizing system and no flow in suction.
- Hey Gamel..Lets see if i got this question right..You have a circulation pump in a hot water line. this line is a closed loop when no faucets are on. When you let the system circulate for a while say during the day there seems to be a build up of pressure in the storage tank. You were wondering if a plugged loop in the hot water line would cause a dramatic water pressure increase.. the answer is YES..but NOT from the PUMP..the type of pump most people have requires that flow through the impeller be available at all times or two things will happen !. it will cavitate (that's a gurgling sound at the pump) or 2. It will only beat the water that is in the pump and no flow will be apparent. Either one of these though could be a symptom of a plugged hot water line in the loop. Here is what happens to increase the pressure apparent.. The water on the loop is pressurized from the storage tank to the pump then out to the loop .If the loop is terminated and air gets into the end of the line next to the restriction the outside water pressure is acting like a piston compressing the air that air reacts the same as it would in any compressor and can reach higher than normal operating conditions. If you will find the plug and install an expansion bladder in the highest part of your line your flow ,pressure and noise problems will stop...Good luck with the search...From the E
- Q: I was recently driving and noticed my heat gauge in the red. I have a 1992 Honda Accord 4 door LX. When I opened the hood what appears to be water was all over the place. Is this the water pump or something else? I want to fix it this weekend so I was hoping for a better understanding of what it might be. I am aware of the labor involved with the water pump and removing the timing belts to get to it. Thanks a bunch in advance!
- Almost certainly not the water pump. It will leak from the weep hole on the back of the block, near the timing belt housing if it fails, and that won't produce coolant all over the engine. My daughter's 1993 Accord water pump failed and I had a hard time seeing the leakage because most of it happened gradually when on the road. Even if the shaft leaked because the weep hole was plugged it would be inside timing belt cover, not spraying all over. My bets are on a hose, especially near the thermostat housing where the heat is the highest. The thermostat is in a housing on the back edge of the engine - follow the lower radiator hose (weird, huh?) back to the housing. Several hoses come together there. The thermostat isn't going to cause the leak but you need to know where the housing is. The radiator is also a major suspect. As long as you got the engine stopped pretty soon after the overheating began the head gasket is going to be okay, too - it is not a good suspect for the symptoms you have so far. The easiest way to see where the leak is when there is that much loss is to refill the radiator with purified water - never put tap water in the cooling system except in an emergency - and let the engine idle until you see it dripping on the ground (remove the splash guard under the nose) or spraying under the hood.
- Q: The pump works and water goes to the house from the reserve tanks but there can be long delays before it cuts in after mains pressure is lost. After it stops the pressure gauge falls back slowly to zero. Pressure vessel is a sphere has a valve on top. Any suggestions ?
- The guage is probably broken, but that is mostly for reference for setting your start/stop switch. Now, first off I'd check your bladder tank. A bad bladder tank will still give you some pressure but causes the pump to run almost constantly. To test that, there is a bicycle looking air valve sticking out of the bladder tank. Push a key or something in it as if you were to let air out of a tire. If any water comes out, your bladder is bad and has to be replaced. If you have an older style deep well, like a well house where the pump is accessible, check the switch, (little black box attached to the pump). There are two screws that can be turned. One sets the pressure the pump will turn off at and the other adjusts the minimum pressure you want for the water to turn back on and fill your tank. A lot of people go 20/40, I run mine at 30/50. Much more than that and you can run into problems, especially if you have cpvc pipes. They will weaken at the elbows and 60 psi of water can eventually make pin hole leaks. This is from personal experience. You will need a working gauge to set this. If the bladder is not your problem, email me and I'll give you more details on how to set your pump if you need it. Or, you can buy preset switches at your local hardware for $20 and just swap it out. In that case, do not mess with the adjustment screws.
- Q: I have a Stamas boat that I am in the middle of restoring. It has 2 chevy 350's, with borg warner (sp) tranny's, and v-drives. Anyway, it has standard water pumps to cool the engines, and it had 2 Sherwood pumps to circulate the water to cool the tranny's, and v-drives. First, I am using the boat in Lake Michigan only, the water is very cool year round since it is such a big body of fresh water. I was wondering if there was any recommendation on possibly using 2 electric pumps to circulate the water? If so, what would a good unit be? Second, the transmission coolers were brass, with a honey comb in the center for the ATS fluid to run through, and the water would run on the outside to cool the fluid. Is this a more effective way to cool the fluid than with those expensive brass fitting? Just checking before I spend a few hundred on them to see if a better way to cool my engine and tranny's, in all honestly though, I am more worried about effectiveness than cost.
- Why okorder /
- Q: I need a new timing belt and I'm getting that done soon, but my mechanic says that water pumps are usually replaced along with the timing belt at the same time. Does it really need replaced?
- What kind of car? That info would help. Well, usually on most import cars and some domestic, the timing belt runs the water pump. If this is the case, then yes i would be replacing the water pump with the timing belt because if you don't then when the pump leaks you'll end up paying almost the same money again for water pump job.
