- There are a number of different types of pumps (and some overlap between types, too). A suction pump basically sucks water up. This might be a piston pump, or a venturi pump (or some other types). This type of pump raises water up by lowering the air pressure above the water, and letting atmospheric pressure push the water up the tube. Suction pumps can't pull water up more than about 32 feet (because that's how high atmospheric pressure can lift a column of water) but they have the advantage that the pump can be located at the top of where you want the water (rather than down where tie water is). A Lift pump basically uses mechanical force to raise water upwards. This could be a chain of buckets, or an Archimedes screw, or a bubble-lift pump. All these pumps need to have at least part of the pump down at the water level (with the exception of the bubble lift, which is kind of a unique design). The most common water pumps are centrifugal pumps. These use a set of spinning vanes to pressurize the water. Water comes in at the center, and hit spinning vanes; these shove the water outward through centrifugal force, and the outlet pipe is at the outside edge of the circle. One other interesting type of pump is the hammer pump. It's sometimes used in remote farming areas, because you can use the energy of a running stream to pump water high up a cliff. In a hammer pump, you let water flow through a relatively long tube. The tube has a vertical pipe near it's end. You let the water run through, and then suddenly close off the end of the pipe. The momentum of the water (combined with the fact that water isn't very compressible) can force a shot of water very far up the vertical tube. Hope this gives you enough to search for on the web!

- Q: We bought a second hand Rover 75, three months later head gasket blew. This was replaced but blew again due to original wet liners. A reconditioned engine was then put in but head gasket blew again due to original water pump. I am not trying to ascertain blame i would just like to know which is accurate as car seller is saying fault of mechanic as should have changed wet liners and water pump and mechanic is saying it is not common practice to change this parts when you replace a head gasket or engine. Thanks for any clarification, especially if you are a mechanic yourself.
- It seems excessive to have to remove the engine to replace a head gasket. But I typically work on American cars, and I've seen the inside of an Altima, it is quite cramped. If I were you, I'd search google for replace head gasket procedure nissan altima and see what it comes back with.
- Q: I have a 1998 pontiac grand prix yesterday I started leaking anti-freeze so we ( me, dad, bf) checked and came up w/ h2o pump, all the classic signs. so $51 latter started her up and wouldnt you know the same thing. anyone have any tips????

- Q: This only happens while I am running water. I can hear the pressure switch clicking on and off the whole time I am doing dishes, laundry, ... Since it is only when the water is running I believe that means it is not a leak. I changed the check valve and that did not fix the problem. I checked the pressure in the tank and it seemed to be around the 20/40 mark. Any other ideas anyone?Thanks.

- ok before replacing have you cleaned the inside, and if there are air bubbles comming out it is because it is running dry. Basically all biocubes do this, the filter pad is slowing down the water too much, so either rince it well or replace it. Also i would wash out the blue sponge right before the pump as that can hold alot of dirt as well. Then if not add more water. But if you want to replace the pump, try via aqua water pumps. they tend to be the best. owner of the BC 29 and BC 14

- Q: House has bad mains pressure, so previous owner installed a quot;Holding Tankwhich stores water from the mains, before pumping it into the house for the internal tanks.However, after some recent plumbing work when the mains was turned off, it's running a little weird. The pump seems to be constantly running, although at a very low level, and some times when the taps/fawcets are opened, they seems to be nothing for up to 30 seconds (only air), and then the water rushes out. Same thing for toilet/WC cisterns..Any advice/pointers appreciated.CheersJM
- If the possibility exists then relocating the pump below the level of the water source prevent air entering the pump. Having leaks in pipes and seals will let in air all the time and should be corrected. Many centrifugal pumps have a priming hole that is on top to fill the pump with water if they are not self priming but you need to make sure that the pump does not drain empty while closing the hole and starting the pump. Some pumps have a priming tank that is filled with water and then the opened to the priming port, these can be used with the pump already running and will collect the air bubles from the pump while it is starting. Positive displacement and self priming pumps create sufficient suction/vacuume to draw the colum of water intot the pump to get going and if these fail it is due to excess height above the suction water level or leaks in pipes or seals.
