Q: I just noticed a slight leak from my water pump. About the size of my fist. I called one mechanic and was told the 2001 BMW Z3's water pump seals are tight and do not leak with the car is running (engine is hot) but once the car cools the water pump seals expand resulting in the small leak, that I shouldn't worry about it unless it leaks more, the engine over-heats, or dash light turns on. The BMW said I should have the water pump replaced but he may have just said that to make a repair sale. We usualy replace all the following every 100.000 kilometers: Timing belt kits including all pullies, Water pump, Drive belts (The ones for air cond and generator) and becuase half the motor has to be dismantled to reple the spark plugs we also do these as well. All together it cost about $1200.00 AUD to do them all together well worth it and saves you about $1000.00 in servicing in long run. Hope this is helpfull. Note our cars has just turned on to 388.000 kilometers with out missing a beat also we change oil and fileter and service it as required by the service book but then again it never has broken down or given us problems. Its better than buying new car everytime the blow up du to no proper servicing. :)

Q: someone told me my water pump may be going out and it sounds like their is a loose barron inside of it, so how much is it and and if i was to have someone else to fix it how much will it cost me: This should be a V6 engine correct. if looking at front of engine,toward the belt , the water pump is located behind pulley appox. 5 inches on the side toward radiator. highest pulley on right side of engine. Replacement can be performed easily without many special tools.. First loosens each of the pulley bolts on pump. Then release tension on belt and route away from pulley. Remove remaining pulley bolts and pulley , Water pump has 5 bolts holding it to cover assembly, Mark-index the way pump installs and remove. Clean all gasket material. Install new pump and gasket, refill system and to open air blled on cooler pipe near water pump to allow air to escape.

Both are new for a 2003 Buick ParkAve Ultra with 95k miles. 1st time we're replacing the water pump.: It depends on which pump you are getting from napa the reman pump or the new pump also that is not the only thing that you will need! you will also need the plastic elbows that go from the water pump to the alternator bracket (as soon as they are touched they will break into a million pieces) there are 2 elbows in the Dorman/help bubble pack both will be needed (they aren't very expensive though) And yes the 4 hours is fine (my database calls for almost 5 hours (4.8) that's because it's an Ultra (supercharger is an interference when accessing the pump) So continue with what you are doing just be sure to get the NEW pump from NAPA
