- Q: I am thinking of buying a carpet shampooer. We just bought a house that has a lot of carpet. Is it smarter to buy a shapooer or keep having someone come in and do it for us? And if a shampooer is ideal which is the best brand?
- Depending on how often you shampoo your carpet, you will definately get your monies worth in just a couple months or so. My daughter and I have asthma and I have 3 kids...that's enough said, so I clean my carpets about every 6 weeks due to the asthma whether they need it or not. I bought a bissel from wal-mart for about $80 so I had gotten my moneys worth in just two cleanings. I've now had that same bissell about 5 years so it is very worth it just purchase one. I love mine and my sister n law and friends had borrowed it a few times and decided to just buy one for themselves and have never been sorry!!

- Hi Claire, In choosing a Rug which lasts approx 10 years or more I would suggest that in this case you choose a neutral color. I realize many may think that Tan, Taupe or Light Gray. are a safe choice and so basic. But with that said Carpeting can expensive. Changing the Wall Paint is far more cost effective. In the future, you may decide to use another wall color paint in the room. Tan, Taupe or Light Grey would be my thoughts for you ! * All of the above mentioned colors come in a variety of many shades. I also suggest taking a Paint chip with you to the store for comparisons if you are concerned. Tan/Taupe will provide an earthy color to the room, while Gray colors are visually cool color. - Carpet tiles over full carpet. The carpet in my childhood bedroom has silly putty stuck in it, marker stains, nailpolish stains, paint spills, you name it. Carpet tiles are good for young kids because you can REPLACE them. Accidents happen, kids are messy and getting someone to clean your carpet is expensive. This also gives you the option to change the flooring when your daughter gets older if she wants something different. Picking up carpet tiles is cheaper then hiring someone to take out old carpet and install new.
- Q: wax cleanup from rug
- don't use an iron. You have a good chance of melting your rug if it is made of synthetic fiber. I used an iron on a rug before and the rug material actually melted and stuck to the cloth I had laid on top. If your carpet is wool or cotton it won't melt...but the melted wax will actually wick into the carpet fiber when it liquifies. Do the opposite. Get a bag of ice and freeze it for several minutes, then scrape the hardened wax from the carpet with a credit card or plastic scraper. If there is any wax color remaining in the carpet, you may have more problems.

- I don't know that they are but you ought to call the co. and ask. You know how different companies are about their vacumns. This could be totally the truth. Call and find out. If you find out from the co. then it won't be heresay and you will know for a fact.

- That is not a standard rug size and I doubt you will find one … good luck looking! ;) OR ~ You can go to a carpet store and ask to look at remnants – when you find something you like they can trim it to the size you need and bind it for you – so the edges are nest. It will cost about $2 a liner foot to bind and remnants are inexpensive… so the “custom” rug will cost you maybe $100 – $200 tops - possibly more if you chose high end carpeting…
- Q: i have a little dog and i'm still training her so i have a carpet cleaner spray i use on her areas that she had an accident on. Well anyway she did her thing inside instead of outside and i grabbed the tilex tile cleaner with bleach instead of the carpet cleaner and now my carpet is bleached in 2 areas! I am moving apartments in a month and i am afraid i wont get my deposit back. Is there any carpet dye or somthing i could do???
- When the person we had come over and feed the cats cleaned up a fur ball she used the only thing she could find, comet dishwasher detergent with bleach. I saved a remnant when they installed the carpet and had somebody splice it in but it still didn't look right. Actually the maintenance guys there might know just the trick. But most of the time people don't get their deposit back unless it's in better condition than when you moved in (if documented on move in) was my experience. You could call or see a professional cleaning or janitorial service and ask if they could help you out with some tips and some types of dyes to use. You could buy a carpet sample that is similar for a buck or two and experiment on it, buy a couple fabric dyes but don't make it worse than it already is. This has huge potential for disaster so be super careful, a professional would be better.
