They can be made of anything...I've had fuzzjy synthetic ones, looped cotton ones, a whole array of materials, but if they were designed for use in the bathroom, they had a non-skid backing on them. Kitchen rugs are often reversible. My favourite are the rag rugs, tightly woven colourful cotton rugs made from twisted rags, often in colour schemes (in my pair, the dominant colour is blue). They are durable, colourful, absorbent, easily washed in the machine, and release soil much better than nappy rugs. And they are dirt cheap...I have a pair in my kitchen that have been in use for more than 10 years and I paid less than $5 each for them in a place like WalMart or a dollar store. They are just now starting to fray a bit!

We do it our selves, and we can keep going until the used water is not black, more of a khaki color. I also have a family member who uses a power wheel chair, and that thing isn't clean either. Mats at the door ill collect most of the dirt that comes in, but they are slippery for W/c's so I can't use them. :-( I use Bissell's carpet shampoo, as it has removed things that Rug Doctor shampoo missed, and I thought were permanent stains.

I learned a trick from some apt owners (250 apts at their site). First pretreat with Shout Use recomended soap or less. Never use more soap because if it is left in carpet it attracts dirt Rinse with a cup or so of shout in the rinse water because it cuts the foam of the soap so you can get it out. (Antifoam) Shout is my hero when it comes to carpet! Hope it helps
