The important things to make sure of is that 1) The grain of the carpet all goes the same way 2) Make sure they all fit together well. If you have a piece that doesn't quite fit... toss it and use another one. 3) Make sure they are well adhered to the floor. If they are not securely glued they will shift with use and after a few months it will look like you used carpet squares.

- The only thing you can do is cut in a new piece. My brother and I do flooring on the weekends. We have done this repair many times. You have to have the right equipment to do it right. (hot iron and seam tape) If the carpet is fairly old, you can also cut out the burn if it is small and re-seam at the cut. This is also done with a hot iron and seam tape.

- Sprinkle bicarb soda (baking powder) over the carpet and vacuum. The carpet will be cleaner and less smelly. Then treat the stains by rubbing the bicarb into the pile of the carpet and pouring a little white vinegar over the area. Allow to dry, then vacuum. You may have to repeat this process, but it does work. It is inexpensive and does not damage the carpet. I use this method on carpets (urine stains from an old cat) tapestry sofa and chairs and dining chairs which are antiques and it works every time.

- I'm with sstephsanderss. I typically use a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water (can be made stronger for tougher stains) for carpet stains. Borax and water is another great stain remover. I have successfully used these methods to clean every stain on our carpet.
