If you have or can get a lot of old cloth, cut it in even strips and make a long, continuous braid, making sure the ends of each strip are tucked into the back side of the braid. You can then lay the braid in a tight coil and stitch it together into a round or oval rug. The different colors of cloth make an interesting pattern. This is a brief explanation, but I'm sure you can find full directions on making rag or braided rugs online.

Granted, old carpets are notoriously dusty as they fall apart.....the backing degrades, etc. If you plan on being in the home for awhile and like the look of industrial, fine, but many prospective homeowners will be put off. The plush home carpet is much preferred. I've had the short pile carpeting in family rooms and liked it for resisting traffic, but didn't find it any better for stain removal. Also it was glued down and the stink was horrible for awhile. Hopefully they have low VOC adhesives now. A lot of water/staining wasn't good as the carpeting couldn't be lifted to dry, hence more prone to mold.....thinking back to when kitchens were carpeted. I fully understand where you are coming from, hallways are my nemesis for wear and dirt/stains. I too have (and continue to) think about industrial just in that area. Maybe you just need a shorter pile, but not as short as industrial. I'd also study up on the different type fibers and their wearability.

You can tell it's fake but is the best looking laminate I could find. It came with individual beveled planks, 3 sizes, to make it look more like hardwood. It was for my basement family room. I would have gotten hardwood, but I didn't want to pay to install a sub-floor. For resale value, I'd recommend going with real hardwood. It looks so nice and is quick to clean with a Swiffer Vac. It sells around $3 sq. ft. and up.

Q: It's pretty funny because we are both artist but can't seem to agree on a rug. My living room is bubble gum pink, yes and extremely wild color. My sofa is a sage or dull fern green. My coffee table is dark walnut. What color rug would you place in this room? My FI was looking at a sage color rug with modern flowers on it my only problem is that it doesn't have any pink in it.
