- Q: I have two area rugs that need cleaned. They aren't stained, just a bit dingy looking from my lab laying on them. One is a jute type rug, 8x10, and the other is a mixed type blend 7x9, it does have some wool in it. I was just wondering if I could use my hand held steamer, I have a Shark Steamer, to clean these? Will it hurt them?If I do this, what should I use with it, just water or some kind of carpet cleaner, etc?
- Follow the instructions on the tag. Or if there are not any call the manufacture of the rug. They may be able to help you with the cleaning. In my experience, you can try and clean on your own it will be the cheapest way to do it. And if you ruin the rug, you can always buy a new one. The ones you have now are dingy and if you cant clean them you need to get new ones anyway. I recommend getting a cheap rug for the dog to lay on that way you can replace once he messes it up without it being a big expense on you.

The manager also claims that the carpeting that is currently installed could potentially last another 4-8 years. The current rule here is that if you damage the carpet and it must be replaced within the first 7 years, you must pay x/7 of the value. My question is: If we trash our carpet and move out in 4 years, they won't be able to charge us. Why can't I just replace it now with carpeting that I like? Does this sound right? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
- They will be able to charge you because the carpet you are installing is not commercial grade? If you replace it, are you really going to live in that SAME apartment? It's not worth it to replace someone else's place. Save yourself the money and be happy. Put rugs over it or something that you like, don't replace the carpet!
- Q: I've read you shouldn't put them on hardwood because it doesn't allow the wood to breath or something along those lines. Secondly, if you use a rug without the rubber backing do you have to use a pad so it doesn't slide and scratch the floor?Thanks
- Ok you are absolutely right about not having rubber backed rugs on hard wood. First , yes it doesn t allow the wood to breath and on certain finishes it will permanently stain the finish. And if you go w/o a rubber backed carpet, the other posters are right about a matt. BUT It must be the matting made for hard wood to allow it to breath. They make a few different types and sizes ( so know your rug size) These will do there job, collect dust and lose there griping power after a few months.
