- Snow is less of a problem than driving rain. As long as your pony can get some form of shelter, even a wall or hedge, then Highlands are well capable of coping. Older ponies may need more consideration, but generally speaking, well nourished Highlands can cope. You will often see snow lying on their backs, unmelted. This shows how well insulated they are given their body temperature.

I don't have access to expensive supplies so I'll need to know how to do it myself with out steam `cleaners or anything else... - For a rug this large, I suggest using either a foaming cleaner, like Woolite Spray Foam Carpet cleaner or a dry granule cleaner like Capture or Resolve. The both types of cleaners are a simple application. Just spray on the foam, agitate with a brush to work into the fibers, allow to dry and vacuum up. Dry granule, sprinkle on surface and work into the fiber with a brush and let dry, then vacuum. If you have spots or stains, just work either into it with a brush. I like the Woolite because it also contains a scotch guard that leaves a stain repellent and makes cleaning up spills easier without staining.

The most important factor when steaming your carpet: steam-clean it only once. You may be tempted to steam-clean it numerous times, since you've rented the machine, but if you do this the carpet pad and the floor will remain wet and your carpet will smell moldy and musty. I own a Bissell Proheat 2X carpet steamer and I steam my carpets every 2 weeks, but then I have cats and a dog. When you rent a Rug Doctor, you can also buy the shampoo and other treatments at the same time. Or you can go to the carpet-steamer aisle and pick out your own favorite smell of liquid carpet cleaner. Or, if you are very careful, you can use a small amount of laundry detergent instead. Too much detergent, and it will remain in your carpet and actually attract dirt.
