- Q: 3.4 and with in 2 months the cat coverter was replaced twice. Then the o2 sen replaced then things fine for day then engine light was back on. took car back in the tested and keeps bringing back to cat converter. So what else can I be looking to check?
- We have been seeing a lot of failures of the original converters in these cars, and GM has even been replacing them for free under special policy #05551, up to 10 years and 120,000 miles, but the new converters are redesigned - they do not typically fail. This does not explain why you have had to replace several of them. Typically when the catalytic converter fails repeatedly it is caused by an engine misfire condition. When a misfire occurs, unburned gasoline in the exhaust stream burns inside the converter, overheating it and causing it to fail. I suspect that this is what is happening. In other words, you need to find the reason why the converter is failing repeatedly. Some more information would help. There are several ways that catalytic converters can fail. Some questions: Has your service engine light ever been flashing, or was it always on steady? If the light flashes it means that the computer has detected a misfire, which as I stated before can damage the converter. How does the vehicle run? Does it seem to have enough power? Does it seem like the transmission is shifting in a way that you are not used to? (A misfire or other engine performance problem often shows up as late or harsh transmission shifting.) Are we just talking about the light being on with no running problems? Finally, are these GM original equipment converters or something from Autozone or Napa? I'm not trying to slam aftermarket parts, I have a very specific reason for asking this question. It has to do with the fact that you said you replaced one of the oxygen sensors. I won't go any farther with this aspect just yet, but I need to know this. It would be helpful if you could tell me if your car has ever set a diagnostic code P0420. Get back to me and I'll try and help. Mike
- Q: this was a week ago, the check engine was on for 3 dayslight now it has not appeared again
- It's probably nothing. Check engines lights come on for ridiculous reasons. I'm guessing what it would mean was your fuel to air ratio was lean and that's what made the light come on. It could do that because you need your injectors cleaned and or maybe there was a piece of carbon in there for awhile which made it lean out a little bit in turn turning your check engine light on. If your injectors were super dirty your car wouldn't run. I don't worry about check engine lights myself just because they'll come on for a stinking exhaust leak or whatever. They're quote annoying. I was kind of taught the old school way and just listen to your engine. If there's something wrong with it you'll hear it. I'd suggest though go to wal mart, autozone, whatever you have and get some injector cleaner. They have a bunch of different kinds you just add it to your tank of gas when you are about to fill up. That'd clean them out. If you have problems finding it just ask the guys at autozone or advance, napa I don't know what kind of auto parts store you have. But normally they're willing to help you out. And theyll steer you the right way. Hope that helps a little.
- Q: Is there any change in car headlamps?
- Of course, the garage can be changed
- Q: I‘m having a problem with my a/c system. the interior lights on the controls no longer come on, and many things don‘t work anymore. the fan comes on blows air, but it‘s no longer heated. and the ducts don‘t move either, for when you want the air from the outside vs inside air circulation. everything was fine yesterday until the thermostat housing was attempted to be taken off.the last bolt wouldn‘t come off. and the housing has shifted a bit from its original place, and wont be budged back. could this have anything to do with it. i checked all fuses and they work fine. any solutions?
- If you want heat, it's carried by the engine coolant. If the engine thermostat housing isn't closed tight, the coolant will all leak out and not carry heat anywhere- the heater, the radiator- not anywhere, and it will stay where you don't want too much of it- in the engine. The engine will overheat very quickly without coolant in it and be damaged badly. The interior heating ducts are controlled, often, by engine vacuum carried by little hoses and some may have gotten knocked loose. Some cars do this wth cables and levers instead of vacuum. You need to look in a good auto repair manual like Chiltons and see where everything related to heating and cooling belongs and make sure it's still there. But before you try to start the engine, fix the thermostat housing. Get a friend who knows about these things to help you and don't let it get dark before you finish working. Since the heater lights don't come on anymore, find the wire that got knocked off and plug it back. How do bolts on an engine near a thermostat get stuck? Maybe it's rusted in place, or stuck with block sealer that was used to stop a leak. Leak stop with sodium silicate will do that, and that's about the best kind of sealer, but the problems it can cause are what you have. I hope you never have to take the head off- some of the head bolts might be stuck too and they are extremely hard- I wouldn't want to have to try and drill out one, and you'd need a diamond drill, or at least carbide. If you break the thermostat bolt, you'll have to drill it out and tap new threads in the hole so a new bolt will go in and hold. That simple job got very complicated, didn't it.

- 1996 Toyota Camry Check Engine Light
- Q: I borrowed a friend's Toyota Highlander because I was having my car detailed. He has a very small garage so when I backed out the entire bumper came off and the grill cracked. I went to an auto body shop and had it fixed the same day. The guy did an excellent job but I noticed the left blinker was going off but I was too busy too check it. So I was coming home late and all of a sudden I noticed the lights weren't coming on. What should I doI'm going to take it to the toyota repair center.but I would like to have an idea of what it might be! I need help ASAP!!!!!
- sounds like your switch is bad, or you burned up the fuses check them 1st
- Q: 04 durango engine light.why did it come on?
- Steven J has apparently never turned a wrench on his car, before. On a CRX, I can swap out the intake in about 2 minutes. It's a piece of cake. And it will NOT cost $300. And if all you're doing is swapping an air filter like he did, that's about 30 seconds worth of work. IF THAT. And if you're stupid enough to belive KN's advertised claims about what it will do for your car.well.there's just no helping some people. Edit: Kenny, I gave you thumbs down, because like you said, you're saying what everyone else is. There was no point for you to answer, when answers that satisfied the question were already given. Nevermind that it won't cost as much as you said it would anyway. But if all you're going to do is agree with people, there's no point in posting. Doesn't help in the slightest.
- Q: Hi, I recently got my VW Jetta an oil change and tire rotation. However, the dealer said my engine light is still on and needs more maintenance to fix that. They said it possibly could be my gas cap not being on tight enough letting too much air into the tank causing the light to come up. I just got it scanned at auto-zone, and the code that came up was: P2432. It said something about air flow or fuel injection. How much do you think this would cost if I took it back to the dealer? Should I take it to a non VW mechanic and do it for cheap? Any experts on VW Jettas would be much appreciated.

- Q: I saw some photos from a Lumix digital camera taken in very low light (a bar). They were black and white, with almost an infrared feeling to them, and sharp (not that grainy). Can anyone tell me which model might be able to do that, or what the feature is that allows this on a point and shoot? Thanks.
- Since I haven't seen the photos you speak of there's no way to tell but, low light photos really aren't a camera issue - they're a lens issue. The camera only captures what's sent to it by the lens that's mounted. I'd also have to believe that there was some software editing done.
