- Q: I have a 99 pontiac sunfire breeze and there is a light that is coming on in the dash saying ETS off. I can not find it in the book and the people at the auto store dont know what it means either. Could anyone help me on this?
- It is the traction control system. Assuming that you cannot just hit the button and turn it off (the left side of the floor shifter) It normally is tripped because of a bad hub bearing or ABS wheel speed sensor. I have seen the ets light come on due to turning sharp on a slippery surface (ie mud or gravel) when an actual problem doesn't exist. Have Auto Zone or Advance pull your computer codes for you and then clear the ETS light. IF it comes back on, you have a sensor bad, if not, it may have tripped due to wheel spin and it's nothing to worry about. PS, the guy above me doesn't have a CLUE. Although a Sunfire might not be the best American car made, there are plenty of American cars that are MUCH better than ANY underpowered, uncomfortable, jap crap that has timing belts to be replaced, bad cv joints, weak automatic transmissions, and HIGH repair bills. If you HAVE to go Japanese, buy Nissan!

- Are you talking about the check engine or the change oil light? Check engine is reseted after repairs are done. YOu can also undo the battery for 45 seconds this will take care of it, but if the problem wasn't fixed it will come back on. If you're talking about the change oil light the procedure is the following : 1. turn key to ON position 2. Step on gas pedal 5 times 4. Start it up

- A check engine light can be caused by a number of things from a faulty gas cap to O2 sensor to temp.sensor. An interior light that stays on could be a faulty door switch or a short in the bulb receiver. Also, check all ground wires that you can find. Make sure they are connected. I had a Silverado that ran great until it warmed up but when it did warm up it threw check engine lights. After a lot of blood, cursing and tears I discovered a broken ground from the cab to the engine block. Good luck

- there has to be something that tells you the temp inside the car? A thermometer? compare it to what you set the climate control on it should be the same temp or near. To see if there is a charge put the climate control on the lowest setting and see if the air coming out of the vents is cold if not then there is no charge if you hit the gas a little and the air becomes colder then there is a low charge.
- Q: I have a 1997 Acura RL, Just last week, when gently braking, the pedal releases for a moment and I hear a motor of some kind engage. This only lasts a moment and the brake takes hold again. I bought the car on a very limited budget, and I don‘t have much to repair issues. The ABS light, TCS light and Check Engine lights have been on since I bought it a year ago. The pads and rotors are fine, as is the brake fluid level. What on earth is this?! If it‘s simply the ABS, can‘t I pull the fuse and just drive the car w/o the ABS system? - Could be the wheel sensor or the ABS module. Look at the rotors to be sure the ABS ring is clean. Clean the wheel sensor too while you are there. Dirty ring and sensor will cause havoc with the ABS. good luck.
- Q: I believe its a 2004. Had the oil changed yesterday. and today the check engine light came on. took it to auto parts place, they hooked it up and said it was clear and no codes came up. could it have been the oil change? should i take it to a mechanic? it also started to make a rather loud rattling sound, but that was before the oil change, and it only happens sometimes.
- mis fires at times can make the light come on, however unless it is a complete dead miss they usually they will not register a DTC code in the system. That possibly could be the issue. I have never heard of an oil change causing an issue with the check engine light. good luck
- Q: I am working on a 92 Camry, 1.6 motor, auto tranny. There is light brown oil in the radiator. The owner of the car said he drained the water several times but there is stil that same color oil in there. I was thinking either the gasket or radiator from the tranny. I checked the tranny fluid and the motor oil and it was clean no water in it. The motor runs and sounds reallly good. Could it be possible, when he purchased the car, the previouse owner had a bad head gasket and ended up getting oil in the radiator, then repaired it and now the oil in the radiator is so thick that it hasnt flushed out when we replaced (flushed) the coolent? There is a little smoke out the tailpipe but it doesnt smell sweet like coolent. It‘s very little smoke but constant, maybe bad rings? there is also water dripping from the tailpipe, and the weather is not cold. I dont remember if he said the water in the rad goes low fast. anyone know? I‘m changing the head gasket anyway on Wed but dont want 2.
- Water won't show in the oil pan unless the block is cracked. With a blown gasket, it sucks water out of the jacket during intake and blows air into the jacket during compression. What will show up is a white/gray glup sticking to the underside of the oil filler cap. Go to a part store and borrow a pump up radiator tester. If the system holds presure then there is nothing wrong. Also take the radiator cap off and run the engine for 20 minutes. If the gasket was leaking, air would be blown into the water and you will see bubbling water (steaming water is normal). All three symtoms are normal. Even with the chemicals in the antifreeze, the inside of the block still rusts changing the color from green to brown (especially if he has been running straight water). Time to flush. If I look hard enough, I've found rainbows in all water to some degree (easier to sell little old ladies overhauls). Bigger rainbows if the antifreeze has water pump lube in it. Water out of the tail pipe is normal in the morning. During the night water condenses in the muffer and is blown out in the morning. Watch a car when it is below freezing, a big cloud follows it for 20 minutes. If it is still spitting water after a half hour then I would worry. All that said, if you had a 2.2, I would say that the gasket ripped from #3 to the water passage behind it. They were famous for doing it. However I have never heard of a 1.6 leaking. I even saw a lady pour cold water into an overheated '83 corolla and it didn't leak.
