If the shop you took it to couldn't find out what the cause was, take it to another shop. You can also go to Checker Auto, Autozone, etc., and they will read your 'check engine' light for free. If you have a misfire, the code will come up as a 'cylinder number x misfire', or 'multiple cylinder misfire'.

Q:In my 1986.5 Toyota Supra, the battery light is always on. The car starts, runs, and the alternator always charges the battery great I have brand new terminals. I am mechanically inclined but I have never run into this before I‘d some feedback maybe help me toss some ideas into the air on what it could be, also the wires look great and the voltage reads fine and the grounding and tightness of the wires are solid.: Could be just a weak battery, but If everything seams to be OK you could just have a short in the system or a bad warning light. Q:ok so recently my car will not hold a charge. i have to jump start it every morning before work. they tested it at auto zone and said the battery tested ok and the alternator was over charging (140 i think amps?) but after completely replacing the alternator its still doing it. its fine if im driving but when i hit my brakes or turn on my turn signal it drains the battery really fast and i have to floor it to charge back up. my bright light completely kill the car as soon as i hit the switch. and my dome lights keep staying oni cant get them offalso when i hit my turn signal all the lights in the car flash with them. today we found a slice in the battery cable. it was pretty bad but we fixed it as best as we could and taped it tightly. any suggestions as to what this could be? i deliver pizzas and need a decent running car. its a 1996 pontiac bonneville seit has the 3800 if that matters. i wasted money on the alternator so i dont want to buy a new bat unless i know thats it: Chasing electrical problems can be a nightmare. You do have a short in your electrical system. First start by replacing the bad wire you found. Now look for other problems with the wiring from the battery positive (red) to the starter and negative (black) to the engine ground point. Replace any bad wire you find. Now on the electric draw with engine shut off. First get a good Volt Ohm Meter that will read amps. Remove the negative battery lead and using an algator clip hook the meter in between the negative cable and the negative post on the battery set the meter to DC amps. You will get a reading now pull one fuse at a time to see when the reading goes towards 0 amps, it wont go directly to 0 amps but you want the draw to below 60 milliamp. What ever fuse drops the load is the culprit now search that circuit to find the draw. Pulling the radio and PCM fuse will stop the drain but these are designed to use a very minuet amount of power. Your dome light may be the dimmer switch is turned to the dome light on position, try turning the switch and see if that turns the light off. If not then there is a short in the ground line from the dome light to the door switches. Be patient and don't rush or skip on repairs.

Q:I have a store bought diagnostic machine that the guys who work in the shop and sold it to me said it really does work, which I tend to believe since them saying so could result in them losing money. Anyhow, I have a small emissions system leak, did the gas cap, reset the light, it cam back on. So, I am calling around to see who can fix it for the least amount of money. My local dealership said they would have to still run a diagnostics test running me $100 more dollars even though i can tell them what the problem is. They said their diagnostic will tell them precisely where the leak is, which sounds a little fishy to me, i don‘t think that machine would tell them that, wouldn‘t it be a visual or some other type of inspection other than the diagnostic machine. also, regardless of the diagnostics, how much should this run me so i know who is trying to steal from me and who is being more honest? This is not covered under my extended warrenty.: This is a generally easy question to answer. The leak could be anywhere in your exhaust system. From the exhaust headers on the front/side of the engine, all the way back to the muffler. Generally, though, these leaks tend to be around the O2 (oxygen) sensors. Most cars have 2. Some could have 1-3 of them. Go to an exhaust specialist and ask them if they could help you find the leak. Otherwise, if it is not the exhaust, it could be a vacuum leak in the engine bay. Most engines now have rubber hoses that are all over the engine that allow air to be pulled through various areas of the engine. If you can do it yourself, check all the hoses and see if you can find one that is detached. A good source of reference would be a Hanes auto manual which you can pick up from Auto Zone.
