Q: Why is a free press essential to democracy? If there were no free press, how would you get your information? If you couldn’t trust the information, what effect would that have on your political attitudes? Can we maintain a democracy when most Americans pay little attention to political events?
You just kind of answered your own question. Free press and the freedom of speech are essential because democracy is founded on the idea of equality, and everyone being able to have a say in politics. If there was no free press, then the public would get a distorted view of events, and those in power could manipulate ideas in their favour, and essentially control the power. I think that basically a combination of two things would happen if information was not trustworthy: One, there would be an underground network of information and news flow that would reach the people dedicated to finding out the truth. This could eventually lead to a sort of rebellion. Two, people would think what is the use of caring, if the government will do their own thing anyway? and these people would simply try to make the best of it under whatever system they were stuck with. Little political interest, I believe, is not a tragedy, at least not now. It means that people trust their government, or at least that there is no crisis of legitimacy or no major concerns. Usually there is more involvement when things take a down turn, and people are not satisfied with the current government etc. For example, the last election generated way more interest than most.
Q: i'm looking to buy a new cookie press as my old one has had it. on ebay i see lots of vintage sets. are they worth the purchase? i make cookies so regularly that this is an important purchase. is there a perfect cookie press? i've used wilton before and it broke within the first few uses. my old cookie press is pedrini, an italian brand. i would love to hear another baker's opinion.
I think that the perfect cookie press is Biscuits(Marcato) made in Italy. It has two settings for cookie thickness and is not at all finicky when it comes to the dough. It is made of Aluminum. I also own a Pampered Chef cookie press and I am happy with that one also.
Q: I want to make my own herbal tinctures at home, such as echinacea and cayenne tinctures. I see presses vary in price, from around $40 to almost a thousand $. Does a $40 herb press do the job, this job being to be able to make a few quarts of tincture from one batch of herbs?
I have never heard of using a press for tinctures. I think of a press for expelling oils. Tinctures are liquid extracts using the herb and a medium like alcohol (grain alcohol or vodka), vinegar or glycerin. When I make tincture, I am usually using fresh leaves. I get enough leaves to fill the bottle. I run the leaves through the food processor and pack the bottle. Then I fill the bottle with the liquid. I use 90 proof vodka or grain alcohol with water 50/50. Vinegar I use straight. I have never tried glycerin for my homemade tinctures. I did make valerian tincture a long time ago. I used the powdered root and I forget the amount I used. You can use leaves, flowers, roots or the peppers, crush or chop and for dry ingredients fill your container halfway and then add the alcohol. I would spend my money on bottles, herbs or alcohol rather than a press. Good luck! Making a gallon would require a lot of herbs. Dry herbs would be equal to half a gallon of chopped herbs to a gallon of alcohol. Most tinctures need to age for around 6-8 weeks. Then you strain them out through a sieve and then a cheesecloth or tightly woven white towel. Then bottle. Remember, tinctures are strong medicines. Use them by drops or dilute before ingesting.

Q: I was wondering where I can buy a cheap seated bench press. My friend had one called life circuit where could I find that one.
try craigslist, they have all sorts of stuff on there
Q: I use almay clear complexion foundation, and I am looking for a powder to go over that...i have fair skin so i use all the light colors. I also like the natural look, where it doesnt look like youre wearing.......makeup.. SO.....I purchased almay nearly naked LOOSE powder and liked it, but was scared it was going to make me break out since it wasnt on the clear complexion line, although it is still non clog poring. I exchanged it for Almay clear complexion press powder and im afraid it will dry out my skin? Help? has anyone ever used these items before? If so..what do you like better? I have sensitive skin..gets kinda dry at first, than oily during the day. Thanks
I much prefer loose powder. It has a more natural look. I have sensitive skin too. So I only wear makeup about 3 out of 7 days of the week. I would say that most likely the pressed powder won't break your skin out IF you don't put too much on AND you moisturize first. I would recommend Aveeno. It has an SPF and doesn't break my skin out bc it's hypoallergenic. I have found loose powder to not clog my pores as pressed does. Try investing in both and use the pressed powder in your T-zone (nose, forehead) where your skin is oily and breaks out more. Then, apply the loose powder on the rest of your face. hope that helps!
Q: Mabelline Mineral Pressed Powder or Maybelline Dream Matte what is better like for pimles and li=ong wear
The mineral pressed powder would be best if you're prone to breakouts, because its free of talc, parabens, etc that cause breakouts and clog pores =) I find it wears longer aswell, so its great =) 33
Q: I am trying to become a Freelance Photographer and sell my photos to the local newspapers and other media organizations. I plan on taking pictures of crime scenes and different law enforcement / fire department events in my area.I've talked to a few people and they all told me that I would need a Press Pass. I am unsure as how to get one (I call the different newspapers and places like that and they say that they only issue them to their employees and are not for freelance photographers like myself). If I am a freelance photographer, do I really need one? If so, could I just create my own business and make my own press pass for that business?(I am in California, Los Angeles County)
When I was a newspaper reporter, we reporters used to laugh a bit at our friends asking us to get them a press pass. That was because, we felt, if you had to have a press pass, it wasn't going to do you much good. Yes, we all had press ID. But it was a point of pride not to use it -- just waltz up to the place or person and say, I'm from xyz news. How about that...(and ask your question.) But your situation is a bit different, I see. Okay, here's what some people in your situation (actually needing a press pass) did. We had a county press association, and when I was president, II made name cards for all the members -- even some who were freelancers like you. I think your idea of making yourself a news media with a blog is a good one. Print yourself up a card with your blog name on it, and your id for contacts -- name, phone#, email addy. I bet it would work -- make it _real_ official looking!
Q: i play football and my max on bench press is 190lbs
all these people can bench press but they dont know how and come on here and ask. it always sounds fishy to me. ADD Weight to the bar. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this out. there's no secret formula unless you want to take roids if your asking, m guessing you've never done a real bench press with actual free weights. Heres the formula to figure out you're real number if you even have tried to bench press 190 x .40= 76 76lbs. Yep, thats what you actually bench if anything
Q: a few days ago i was racking up weights on the leg press machine but my gym teacher stopped me and told me that the leg press is bad for the joints and introduced me to the dead liftso im wondering:is the leg press really bad for the joints? (i was gonna leg press 3x my body weight,360 i weigh 120 lb, im dead serious! i cant gain weight for some reason :(,ps im not trying to brag))will the deadlift make a good substitution(for the leg press)?thanks!!
i assume you are talking about doing squats. It is a great exercise for the legs, but it can be hard on the lower back. The dead lift is used by powerlifters as it is said to stimulate muscle fibers in every part of the body including the legs. But use proper form because this lift is also hard on the lower back. A leg press machine minimizes back injury issues, but your coach is right. Heavy lifting is hard on the joints. As for weight gaining, that is a seperate issue.
