- Here's the deal: The dash lights and radio uses very little battery amperage to work. The starter motor in the other-hand, requires more amperage from the battery than every other electrical system on the car COMBINED. Have your battery load tested at any store that sells them except for Auto Zone to see what the reserve amperage capacity is. A battery voltage test is s joke! It may appear to be fully charged 12.6 volts yet have no reserve amperage capacity. Amperage spins starter motors not volts. If the battery is over three years old it more than likely has a shorted cell and can't be charged.

- Q: I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina, my car would not start. Luckily, this all happened in my driveway and not on the highway! I called AAA last night and he tested my battery and alternator, both were in poor condition (the alternator tested in the yellow, about a 12). Before this happened, I left the car running for 10 minutes to warm up (I live in MN), but 3 hours before, my car was running normal. I explained to a family member about what happened and he said, quote, “that doesn’t make any sense”. I moved to a metropolitan area where I do not know anybody personally who can even help me to repair my car. Also, too, I’m worried I was taken advantage of by the local auto technician. Could there be another underlying issue that the technician didn’t even want to take the time to diagnose, such as maybe tightening the alternator belt or just charging the battery altogether? - First, and fore most; some people will take advantage of anyone, including their mother, if given an opportunity. There are bad mechanics AND bad customers, each fighting to win. TRUST is the key word in this situation. Finding a trustworthy, and, reliable mechanic is a chore in and of itself. Secondly, the car in question is twelve years old. All the good stuff has already been sucked out and enjoyed, leaving you a vehicle which could probably use a new one of everything. Luckily the problem you describe has very few related components. The battery, the alternator, the starter, the battery cables, and the alternator belt.So even replacing every component on the list should come in at between $200. and $300.00. Tack on a few hundred bucks for labor costs. Chalk these expenses up in the education column. What will you have learned ? you asked? Well, is the shop clean? Does the mechanic listen to your explanation? Does he treat you with respect? Answer all your questions ect. . the list goes on forever. The easy part is if he fails any one of your tests you can stop going to him. Good luck!

- Price about right for platinum spark plugs and labor if diagnosis included in price. I presume Calif. labor prices high. As for ABS light not for brake pads. For auto. braking system that applies brake to different wheels when conditions apply. Has to be checked separately different ecm controls it. They should have checked at same time.
- Q: Had my oil changed at a place and they told me my check engine light my come on after doing so. He told me how to reset it however I can not remember how he said to do it.Anyone know about this??
- Total BS, the CEL function is to warn operators of malfunctions detected by any of the cars onboard diagnostic systems, powertrain, body, transaxle, etc. Many faults may illuminate the light, if serious enough it will flash at you, indicating a serious problem which may be unsafe for youor damaging to the vehicle. If the CEL light is , or has illuminated there will be a diagnostic code stored in the PCM, or TCM, etc. This will indicate the area or circuit which has been involved in a failure event. Some failures take more than one event to set a hard code, but the problem will still be stored as an indicator for up to 55 start cycles.
- Q: ok took car to Auto Zone due to engine light being on. At first they said it was the Temperature sensor the one that tells the fans to go on and off. But now the light still on. I disconnected the battery but light still stays on. So took it back to Auto Zone were they tell me it something to do with my Cat converter or my Oxygen sensors are giving bad reading. But before took it to another place I had them put there computer on and two errors came up. CAT converter and temperature sensor. They told me not to worry about the CAT converter and go ahead change the temperature sensor and the light should go out but that not the case. What do I do. I don‘t got munch $$$$ right now. between paying bills. should I take it to the dealer I bought it from since I am still paying on the car? They have a shop. Bought the car the car 1 year ago this coming January. Can anyone tell me what the most common thing that goes out oxygen sensors or CAT converter? The car only 4 years old with 70,000 miles on it.
- This is why I don't like places like Autozone. It's great that they scan the codes for free but that's all they're good for. The mere fact that they told you the cat converter code won't turn on the light shows that they don't know what they're talking about. They're not mechanics, they're not service writers.they're mindless idiot part jockeys that can order up some brake pads for you. Without knowing the code it's impossible to tell you if it's the O2 sensor or the converter. If it was a converter efficiency code(which some people will think it's an O2 sensor code) that means the converter is going.but have no worries.if it's the factory converter it has a 8yr/80K mile warranty but you have to go back to a GM dealership for that. As far as the temp sensor.again we'd need the code. Are the fans coming on? Has the car overheated at all? I know $$ is tight but you need to bring it to an actual shop and let them diagnose it.listening to a mindless parts jockey will not only waste your time but more importantly waste your $$$ but buying the wrong parts because some tool behind a counter said so. After enough $$ has been spent and enough parts have been thrown at the problem it'll eventually fix it right? Again, go to a real shop so there is no guessing, no speculation. But again if it is that converter and it's the original GM one it's covered under the 8yr/80K mile emissions warranty.but what do I know? I only do this every day lol

- The service engine soon light is a indicator that the computer has detected a issue. If it is flashing it indicates an misfire condition, and if it is steady, an emissions control systems issue. You will need a OBDI scanner to reset the service engine soon light, and find out what the code means. Auto Zone, and some other auto part stores will do this for free. If it is a steady light, the issue could be a loose gas cap
