- Q: sorry to ask this in military but i figure yall will know best. i‘ve noticed that since we‘ve had usaa auto they have consistently gone up when our policy renews every 6 months. it‘s around 20-50 dollars every time. we have not had any tickets or accidents. when i call customer service they assure me it‘s nothing we‘ve done and that everyone‘s rates are going up. i find this hard to believe. anyone else having this issue?
- I have USAA and one payment for every cycle I get the same thing. Here's what happens, keep in mind I'm using round and random numbers to make the math easier. They have insurance cycles of 6 months, so let's say your insurance for every 6 months is $650. Now, they may decide to only charge you a minimum payment of $100 a month, this means you still have $50 at the end of the 6 months to pay. Now, don't ask me why they don't just divide the $50 between the 6 months, I don't get it either. But you have a certain amount you have to pay every 6 months, with the option of paying a fraction of that amount every month. At the end you make that last payment, and whatever is left over, then your insurance renews for another 6 months and it starts over.

- The light only blinks when the car is off. Wondering if maybe the anti-theft chip in the key system has been hacked, because the LED won't burn-out, there's no fuse or relay in the circuit to go bad. - I doubt any Advance Auto store has a clue when it comes to the ABS brake system. They all just have OBD II code readers where I live. If they do have a $2,500 scan tool where you live that code means you need to replace the ABS control unit that has the pump and solenoids in it. Probably a $1200 repair. I'd go to the dealer first before going any farther. At least you'll have a real mechanic diagnose it instead of a sales clerk!! By the way it is not dangerous, you'll just need to pump the brakes to slow down if skidding in the snow since the ABS brakes don't work.

- Auto Zone can't help you with a late-model Mercedes. Usually, any vehicle service that's free is worth the price (nothing) An OBD2 scanner will not clear the codes in a Mercedes the German engineers didn't allow for that Do NOT disconnect the battery cable, it will not clear the code but it will clear your radio station and clock settings You should try replacing the gas cap, if the seal is worn the fuel system will not pressurize, causing a check engine light. Go to the dealer and buy a new gas cap, do NOT get one from Auto Zone If that doesn't fix it take it to the dealer. The dealer can do a short test with a Mercedes laptop computer. It scans all of the electrical systems on the car, not just the engine Some dealers charge 2 hours labor to do a short test Yours quoted you 1 hour of labor, half price.

- Q: My dad and I are replacing the engine in a golf cart with a bigger one from a snowmobile. The mechanics of the whole operation are taken care of, but we are not sure about the electrical system. the old engine used a starter generator to start and generate power for the lights and such, but the snowmobile engine has a standard starter motor and an alternator built in. We have no idea what kind of system it used for charging the battery. We have the regulator from the old engine and are wondering if we can use this. It is an old mechanical style one with three connections. D+, D-, and DF. Can we use a full wave bridge rectifier to convert the AC from the alternator into DC and then smooth it out with a capacitor and run that power into the old regulator? I‘m not sure how to connect the regulator as we accidentally removed it before taking note of how it was connected. Basically I want it to be able to run the carts lights and recharge the battery after starting.
- These labels mean Dynamo +, Dynamo - and Dynamo field. The plus and minus are the auxiliary output just for the regulator if there is a B+ on the alternator. The field is fed from the regulator, and this is the smaller wire or connection usually. The link below shows the connections. The ignition/charge warning light is necessary to get the alternator started. The wire from B+ to the battery handles the full output current of the alternator. The regulator connections are all 10A automotive wire. The minus side of the battery is grounded at the engine body and this carries the full starter motor current. It is possible there is another ground connection for the lights etc. This goes to the battery negative. There must be a connection between the battery and the alternator frame that can carry the full alternator output. This may be the engine body through the starter motor ground. Some alternators have the regulator built in to the brush holders. The old mechanical regulator will only work if both are thesame voltage, like 12V. If in doubt you can always get an auto electrician to do it. Do the wiring as you think and get them to fix it, so the labour is less.
