- Q: 3 days ago my check engine light came on, so I took it to a shop and had them scan for codes. Came up with the old loose gas cap code. The cap was neither loose nor old (I actually had just had it replaced a few months ago), but I replaced it anyways. The light stayed on, and the mechanic told me they‘re no longer allowed to reset the check engine light for that specific error code. New federal law, apparently. I thought that was pretty weird, but anyhow, the light went off this morning on my way to work. I don‘t know what this indicates, as I‘ve always had the system reset by the mechanic once it‘s fixed. Does it go off by itself over time if the problem has efficiently been fixed?

- Q: I have a 1995 curris. My check engine light comes one after 10 minutes of driving. i took it to a shop to find out what the deal was, the auto guy was like when you drive it you can feel it when the car drops cylinders. what is the cause of this? i get reg. oil changes since i do alot of driving. once a month i have to put fuel injector into my tank, what should i do? some one reconmmended to me that i should like clean out the engines system or whatever with some fuild type stuff. if you think u know what im talking about, do you think that will work? at tymes it does have a burning smell.
- Usually dead cylinders are the result of an ignition system malfunction, such as a fouled plug, bad spark plug wire or coil, as well as a couple of other possible culprits. If the shop you took it to couldn't find out what the cause was, take it to another shop. You can also go to Checker Auto, Autozone, etc., and they will read your 'check engine' light for free. If you have a misfire, the code will come up as a 'cylinder number x misfire', or 'multiple cylinder misfire'.

- Poncho on certain models of the 1999 silverado with the 5.3 liter engine these models have the A.I.R. system.This secondary air injection reaction pump and solenoid pumps air into the exhaust manifold to clean up the emissions.Your going to need to have the dealer or local auto repair shop in your area check the pump and solenoid operation and find out which one is not working.The ones that been in my service dept most of the time the pump is working but the solenoid gets stuck and causes poor air flow that causes the service engine soon lamp.Best of luck with your silverado.

- It could be a number of things, the only way to know for sure is to have an obd2 diagnostic run on your car. Auto Zone will take a look at it for free for you. some possibilities are: simply disconnecting the battery could trigger the light to come on. poor or corroded connections the extra strain the amplifier has put on the electrical system may have damaged the battery or alternator. My guess would be that a drop in voltage caused by the amplifier brought the vehicle's voltage down below 10 volts. This would trigger a warning light on the vehicle, making it think something was wrong with the charging system. That is what the light is for, to let you know when there is an issue with the voltage.

- Pedro is right. Changing parts arbitrarily is not the way to go. You have to find out why the light is on, and that can only be done by interfacing with the car's computer. Autozone will do it for free, and tell you what code/s set the light, what sensor or system is at fault, and then you'll know. You can't simply get the light reset either. You must get the problem fixed, as mandated by laws set forth by local and federal authorities. Even if you could find someone to reset the code, it will just come on again after you drive for 10 minutes. You are also doing yourself and your car a disservice by not fixing the problem correctly. A faulty sensor (or other component/s) can cause drive-ability problems, clog the catalytic converter, ruin plugs, eat gas, etc. My girlfriend's Toyota light came on. Went to Autozone. Their device read the code: PO242 (or whatever) - downstream oxygen sensor. Bought an O2 sensor, put it in, reset battery, voila. Lights out, passed inspection, better gas mileage, even the exhaust smells better (no, I'm not making that last one up).

- you,ll have to get the computer scanned on it to find out what the code is that's making the cel light come on, there's no way i can guess at it and tel yo for sure whats causing that too happen,most common cause is a bad 02 sensor on them that causes that to happen or a bad,crank sensor on it,if you have it scanned you,ll get code from the computer that will explain why this is happening to it,then you,ll know for sure,auto zone will do it for free,good luck with it.

- The way the shift interlock on your car works is that for the control to know that you have your foot on the brake in order to take the car out of Park, the system looks to 'see' if the brake lights are on. So the inop brake lights are the reason you can't take it out of Park without using the emergency key release. In almost 100% of the cases, the problem is with the brake light switch. It is at the top of the brake pedal lever under the driver's side of the dash. if you look under the dash and follow the brake pedal up to the top you'll see it. You'll need to have that switch replaced. You should be able to buy the switch at any auto parts store; they are usually about $20. If you are going to have someone else do the repair, call around and ask for quotes to replace the brake lamp switch. Hope that helps
- Q: 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS.The battery was installed in Aug 2013 (before I owned the car) according to the label on it. The battery itself and the connections look good with no rust on the terminals or the wire, however, I did clip and put a new, better end on the negative cause it was slightly questionable. (Still the lights flickered after that). Went to Advance Auto and had them run a battery/charge test. Alternator issue? I‘m about to install a 300w amp too.Hmmm. If its the alternator I‘ll obviously just replace it but would like to leave that as a last resort.
- Measure between the negative battery post and the chassis. I bet you have a missing engine to chassis ground. It could also be a bad alternator. They often test good because they get intermittent. Battery and alternator tests in shops are overrated.
