Q: Why is my 1994 Honda accord check engine light on? I recently drove from new jersey to south carolina this passed thursdayabout 10 hour drive I would say approx 200 miles or something. I change the oil regularly, have oil all systems go . Except now my check engine light comes on and off now and it never did ever and I‘ve had the car 4 years now. Anyone who moves or lives in the south knows you must have a car or your like nonexistent. Someone with auto knowledge please help me because I always maintain my car and would like to keep it running great as hondas are known for if maintained properly which I do a good job of.: All cars today are fully computerized and when anything goes wrong the computer throws out a code and the check engine light comes on. Usually but not always it is because one of the sensors is malfunctioning. The only way you will find out is to have a mechanic hook up an electronic analyzer to the car and pull codes. If it is emission related you probably will not notice any change in the performance of the car. However in most states you will have to make the repair or the car will not pass the emission test that you need to get your DMV sticker.

Q: I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina, my car would not start. Luckily, this all happened in my driveway and not on the highway! I called AAA last night and he tested my battery and alternator, both were in poor condition (the alternator tested in the yellow, about a 12). Before this happened, I left the car running for 10 minutes to warm up (I live in MN), but 3 hours before, my car was running normal. I explained to a family member about what happened and he said, quote, “that doesn’t make any sense”. I moved to a metropolitan area where I do not know anybody personally who can even help me to repair my car. Also, too, I’m worried I was taken advantage of by the local auto technician. Could there be another underlying issue that the technician didn’t even want to take the time to diagnose, such as maybe tightening the alternator belt or just charging the battery altogether? Before this happened, none of my indicator lights came on, such as the battery light or service engine light. Thanks for the help!: Let's assume that the AAA technician knew how to properly test the car battery - if he says it's in poor condition, you should replace it first, then. if your problem persists, you may need to replace the alternator, but that's more expensive, and a battery is simple to replace and easy enough for you to shop around for pricing on, even as a woman :) It's the type of job that should have a very set cost, they won't need to see your car to quote you on it, so call around a few local auto garages, I think you should get it done for about $100.

Q: I just got a 99 toyota corolla from my sister in Massachusetts. The check engine light is on and has been one for awhile. She took it to two auto shops who said it's the light malfunctioning and the engine is fine. It passed it's inspection in Massachusetts but today when I went to get it inspected in NY they claim it's an automatic fail and that something is in fact wrong with the engine.Is it an automatic fail in NY just because that light is on? He says it's gonna cost me 350 dollars to fix what's wrong but I don't think I trust him. Thanks in advance!: In NY It is an Automatic Failure with a check engine light on. actually If the guy looked at the car first and sent you away he did you a favor. He,by reg's and Law should have took the car in for the inspection saw It and run the complete Inspection and gave you the rejection notice. But yes either or, It does fail. Sorry.Get It fixed and the retest. But for your Information when you fix something on a OBD11 system, the car must be driven for 60 miles to reset and get a good inspection. If you don't trust the guy go somewhere else. It will be better for you all around. We have Plenty of Inspection stations in NY City or State.

Q: 2002 Honda Civic sedan with 94,300 miles. Never any maintenance done except oil changes. All original parts except for tires and battery. I had an auto parts store check the code. It was P1457 which indicates there is a leak in the evaporative emission control system in the control canister. The man that checked the code deleted it and the light has not come back on. Should I still have it checked?: If the light comes back on yes. Unless there has been a decrease in engine performance or mileage its possible you had an error code. If the problem persists then take it into the shop for repair.

Q: Ok. i have been hearing some things on here like: i will have to get a new alternator, battery and 1/0 awg wire for a system thats amp is pushing out 900w rms at 2 ohms. However, i have went to 2 very reputable local auto shops and they have both said that my current set up will be fine for 900w rms, no doubts. my car is a 96 civic ex, with stock alternator, basic battery, and 4 AWG wiring that i was told was good up to 1000w rms. Keep in mind these are very reputable local shops. So, my question is basicly, whos full of shiit and whos not?: You went to the local auto shops and asked them? Being truthfull they're not going to help much but yeah you should be ok if the car is going if the off and your doing parking lot listening than your car will die in like 10 minutes if you dont do a lot of parking lot listening just upgrade the cable 2 o guage wire
