Q: Hi all, I went on vacation and forgot to turn my water heaters to vacation! When I returned the water was cold coming through the faucet. After some investigation I realised the water heater pump had tripped the trip switch on the main electric panel. I reset it and thought all would be fine. Now it is OK for a day or two and then it trips the electric panel again. Any Ideas on what is the matter and how I might fix it? The water heaters themselves are fine and are burning all OK. One more, Should it be in the center or offset twards the top?: Perhaps one of the shaft's retainers, the bearing, or gear is worn, allowing the water pump shaft to move in and out of the case - causing the impeller to rub on the outer cover. Try to pull the water pump out and push it in - there shouldn't be any play. If there is, figure out why. If the impeller can move in and out, that would cause it to knock. If there were any metal shavings in the coolant, they would scrape the outer cover. The water pump cover isn't an even shape, so I don't know what you mean by should it be in the center The bottom end and the cooling system are 2 separate entities. A problem with one will not affect the other.

Q: I own a 2003 Kia Sorrento and recently I was driving and the car completely died. HELP ME!: Well, you can definitely go to an independent mechanic and knock that price down to about $3000 for an engine replacement. I would definitely get a 2nd opinion on damage to the engine, I never heard of the water pump failing causing the timing belt to break. I guess you kept driving when the temperature gauge was rising and caused the engine to seize. Another shop may also be able to rebuild the damaged engine which could save you a lot of money. I don't know if you bought the Sorrento used, but if you bought new, now you know why a loan longer then 5 years is a no no no.

You can buy them at auto parts chain stores for under $20. They are creating CD/DVD versions, but I don't want to touch my computer when I'm greasy. Definitely replace the timing belt while you're in there (and every other belt along the way). No sense in putting in all that work and not replace a $10 A/c belt.
