- Q: I recently purchased a portable generator that is 7 hp and 3050 continuous watts, i tried to calculate the efficiency as follows:743 watts 1 hp7 X 743 5201 watts, (so at 100 percent efficiency, 5201 watts is possible to produce from a 7 hp generator.)the unit produces 3050 watts, so the 5201 watts (possible watts)/3050(actually produced watts) (0.5864) or approximately 59% efficiency, this does not seem right, it should be about half that.What am i doing wrong?
- First, nothing operates at 100% efficiency. You are converting angular rotation into electric power and in any conversion of power, you lose efficiency. 59% efficiency isn't that bad. Second, generators are measured at continuous power and peak power. Check your owners manual or look on the side of the generator. At peak power, you will find that the efficiency is greater.

- I'm assuming by trip you mean shut down/off Plenty of reasons: 1) overheat, most common cause, could be lost water pump or water supply or cooling lines plugged 2) electrical, although diesel does not use sparkplugs there are electrical components. There are glow plugs that get the whole process started when cold, there is a starter motor that gets it all going and there is some method to keep the fuel warm enough to flow correctly 3) Starve for fuel, either fuel ran out, to low temp so its sludge 4) Loss of oil pressure that is used for lubrication 5) Ouput limits, there will be an overcurrent/overvoltage system regulating the output of he generator and if it gets really out of wack then it will kill the whole thing to prevent damage to everything That's all I can think of right now

- Electric heating of your hot water is very inefficient since you have so much heat rejected in the exhaust for every KWHr you make. Your best bet would be to use the exhaust heat and/or jacket cooling water from a biofueled generator to heat the hot water tank. You get very high efficiencies from that combination. I have seen such devices talked about (see the link below) for years, but have recently seen one that is actively under development. It may be a bit oversized for your RV, however, since it is for a house. You may be able to just add a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use a small, thermostatically controlled pump to circulate the hot water from the tank through the tubes. Biofuels are not as available as gasoline, but if you research where you are going, you may find they are more prevalent than you think. Also, the generator will be able to run on fossil fuels as well, giving you a back up in case you can't find biofuel. Hydrogen is interesting, but I can't think a commercially available generator that runs on it. And you would still have the efficiency issue unless you recovered the exhaust heat like I have said for the biofuel. I can't think that solar would work well, you have such a limited amount of collection surface on the roof, and lugging around batteries and/or hot water is also inefficient. I have been on trips where it was cold and cloudy for a week, solar would not do well under those circumstances.

- Depending on where you live try the on line yellow pages. Especially in large farming areas, like Fresno or Bakersfield, Stockton etc. Their will be equipment parts shops that will help you find what you need if they do not have it.

- The power of the diesel is matched to the electrical power rating. In theory, the Diesel requires 21hp to drive a 15kW output and is actually 25 (or more). The Diesel cannot deliver more electrical power. The oversizing of the prime mover (diesel) helps to absorb starting loads and prevent full throttle operation at rated output. In addition, specific exciter voltage is often drawn from the engine. The bell housing and couplings which join the engine to the generator are also likely to be specific. The chances of DIY improvement a slim.

- The size is relevant. Is this a small portable set for homes, or a large stationary unit for a building. I'll assume the latter. Enclose it in a sound barrier, but bring the exhaust out the top and make an air inlet at the bottom that goes to the air intake of the engine. You may need additional openings for ventilation to keep the engine from overheating. You may be able to bring the radiator outside the enclosure to solve that problem. Make sure you have a very good muffler. Look into finding a better one. You may be able to buy an enclosure for the generator, check with the manufacturer. PS, you seem to have this located indoors. That is a very bad idea.
