- Not completely. A diesel engine is a compression engine hence it's the compression that ignites the fuel, natural gas doesn't ignite easily under compression and therefore requires a spark for ignition. However, it's possible to mix natural gas with the intake air but reduce the diesel fuel injectors so that a small amount of diesel fuel is injected, the diesel fuel ignites under pressure and this ignites the natural gas. Basically, it can mostly run on natural gas. Such a conversion requires some way of reducing but not eliminating the diesel injected as well as mixing in the natural gas preferably in proportion to the amount of air or according to the needs of the engine somehow. As it requires changing the fuel injector programming, this is not a conversion that is easily available but kits are available. A more practical conversion for a diesel car would be a waste vegetable oil conversion though I would consider a natural gas conversion suitable for a backup power generator especially if the conversion still allows for full diesel operation when needed. Diesel keeps much longer than gasoline when stored.

- You would need to be more specific. Multiply the watts of one laptop power supply by 14, then get a more powerful invertor. e.g. 14 x 50 watt laptops 700 watts, get at least a 1 Kw invertor. It is difficult to predict how long a particular battery will power an invertor, a 1 Kilowatt load will draw a huge current, about 50 amps from a 12 volt battery. If at all possible you would be better off using a petrol or diesel generator and extension leads, as the size of battery needed would be enormous, you would need a no. of 12 volt large 12 volt batteries joined together, or one battery and one x 100 watt invertor for each laptop. You might also consider using a battery to power a DC to DC convertor for each laptop. For example one laptop could use a 12 volt, 50 AH battery and a 12 to 20 volt convertor, this will probably run a 50 watt laptop for 6 hours. I say probably because the only way to know for sure is to try it out. For the price of 14 batteries and 14 convertors you can probably buy a really good silent 1 kw petrol generator. This will be smaller, lighter and probably safer than 14 x 50 AH batteries.

The basic principle you are thining of is exactly the principle of a modern Diesel electric locomotive short of the battery bank. As a concept- it is very workable. 3 Phase power has an advantage to it of space and weight savings for the horsepower versus single phase.

When purchasing the unit it is better to have a unit larger than your figures suggest rather than the exact size or too small. Honda units are reliable and quiet, also they are gasoline powered while some other brands are LPG or natural gas or diesel. Each fuel type has advantages and disadvantages. For an emergency portable power source a 7.5KW unit will do for most homes. For a back up power unit you will need at least twice that size and some other electrical equipment. Many motor homes have generators between 5 and 10 KW. Good luck to you.

- Doesn't. Rotor (w/ magnets) spins in a stator (coil). When power transfer switch detects a loss of line power, isolates line feed (to prevent linemen from getting zapped), lines up load feed (to house or wherever) and trips starter circuit to gen-set. Or, you go out to shed,shut off your main, plug in your auxiliary cord, and pull-start the SOB.
