Q: I am contemplating on getting a full house generator and need some feedback from you all.l. What is the best brand for quality and durability of a generator and what hp would I needThe house is about 2,000/sq ft, central A/C heat, all electric at the moment with the usual appliances.2. I want to connect permanently to breaker box for automatic turn on and will need fuel for it.3. In light of today's economy and potential collapse if one is in survival mode, is it better or cheaper to have butane or propane ?Also what size tank would need to buy, and how big is reasonable ? to last a good while or as needed.I am totally electric right now including water well pump so when power down, I'm sunk!!
Most of the permanent generators we install down here in Tx are natural gas powered that are connected to the utility. As far as name brand try the Kohler and Generac websites. These sites will also give you the gas consumption rates for the different units. They have alot of good info on sizing. Being as you have all electric it will need to be a decent sized unit to back up the whole home. You could always choose to backup only certain circuits and appliances to bring the demand load down and in turn bring down the size of the gen as well. I've installed 17KW to 100KW(Big Custom Home) units on homes. An automatic transfer switch comes with most stand alone generators. These will sense the utility power drop below a certain voltage and tell the generator to start and will automatically switch to generator power. When the utility power comes back on it will automatically switch back over and stop the generator. Most generators will also test themselves weekly. You can set the time and day for this test. One thing I would recommend is the importance of maintenance. Most generators need to be serviced 2 times a year. I've seen homeowners who did not have a good service plan in place be stuck in the dark when the generator did not work or did not work for long.
Q: I think that they heat up water and put it in a tub right?do they make their own soap? How many times a week do they bathe?
Amish homes have running water and hot water heaters. The homes typically have wells and pressure tanks with pumps that are powered by wind or gasoline/diesel generators. Their hot water heaters will typically use propane gas. Most Amish families buy soap at stores, although some families still make it themselves. How often they bathe is a personal choice, just like you or me.
Q: How to calculate fuel average consumption hours/liter?
You just take the number of hours the generator was running, and the number of liters of fuel it used, and then divide. If it runs for 10 hours on 2 liters of fuel, then its average consumption is 5 hours per liter (10 divided by 2).
Q: And WHY?
Hydrogen you can install a hydrogen on demand generator on any gas or diesel engine. This is the most cost effective thing to do right now it adds Hp reduces es emissions increased gas mileage 20 to 60% or better.
Q: I would like to try a browns gas generator on a 3 cylinder Diesel engine to compare efficiency and save money and not add a turbo to the unit. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience in this. I am also considering a natural gas flow to the intake.
Had the previous responder actually read from his Wikipedia reference he would have proven himself incorrect
Q: hi,Thanks for your help in advance,Need more information on recent trends in applications of DC shunt generator. Kindly help.thank you
Dc Generator Uses
Q: Diesel generator belongs to special equipment
Special equipment refers to the safety of life, greater risk of boilers, pressure vessels
Q: If i had a remote alaskan town of 1000 residents, how much power would I need to generate to run the whole town. Would a diesel generator work?
You need kilowatts, not kilowatt hours. The amount of power you need varies depending on who turns on what at any given time, and especially on what kind of equipment you are using in the mine. Mines can use huge amounts of electric power. Assuming you are talking about a fairly small mine, you are probably looking at something around 500 kilowatts peak demand. This would require a small power plant. You may be able to get a diesel generator this size, but it would be more efficient to use several smaller generators. This would allow you to shut down some generators to vary the output to meet the varying demand.
Q: i know that steam powers the turbine. And depending on the type of plant, i know how the steam is made. But once the turbine is spinning and generating electricity, i get lost. I know it all has something to do with electrons and metal coils and magnetic fields, but can you help me understand it all?
Electrical power plants powered by geothermal energy are common in areas of high crustal heat flow, such as in Iceland, New Zealand, and the western US, including Beowawe, Nevada, and The Geysers, California. The basic principle is to drill a hole deep enough to tap into a water reservoir which is hotter than 100°C, ie, higher than the boiling point. The water is hotter than the boiling point due to the confining pressure, and the water is piped into a turbine where it is allowed to flash (boil) to drive the turbne. The steam is collected, condensed, and re-injected into the reservoir to keep the cycle going. The turbine spins a generator, which converts mechanical energy from the spinning turbine into electrical energy through electromagnetic conduction as the desired output. It doesn't matter that the generator is connected to a geothermal steam turbine, a water wheel, a jet engine, a diesel engine, or a hamster wheel. A generator does not actually ‘create’ electrical energy. Instead, it uses the mechanical energy from the spinning turbine to force the movement of electric charges present in the wire of its windings through an external electric circuit. This flow of electric charges constitutes the output electric current supplied by the generator. This mechanism can be compared to a water pump, which causes the flow of water but does not actually ‘create’ the water flowing through it. A generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831-32. He discovered that the flow of electric charges could be induced by moving an electrical conductor, such as a wire that contains electric charges, in a magnetic field. This movement creates a voltage difference between the two ends of the wire or electrical conductor, which in turn causes the electrons to flow, thus generating the desired electric current. Hope that helps!
Q: If oil prices went super crazy.
The cost of diesel goingup is actually good for railroads. Due to their efficiency they move much more freight per gallon of fuel than a truck. As fuel goes up, the railroads are better able to compete and like any business, it is just one more expense and they have to pass it on to their consumers. There is vegetable oil substitutes for diesel fuel but I dont think we have anywhere near the capacity to produce the amount of vegetable oil necessary to replace petroleum based fuel. Turning our food sources into fuel does not seem to be a wise choice, look at the increase in global food prices as we race toward burning more and more corn in our gas tanks. I dont see going back to steam as being an environmentally acceptable substiture, perhpas onboard steam turbine generators but I dont see it happeing. What we are using now is better. Straight electric locomotives work better than diesel once the overhead system is installed, it is expensive but can be done. The country would need more generating capacity but that can be done also. Railroads using clectrictiy via overhead lines are quite efficient, they recycle electricity as trains go downhill. In the future, that is what you will see, starting in inner city areas first but the country will move toward more electrics in a greener world.
