Q: I get conflicting opinions from mechanics about extended shut-down.I am parked for 3 months and driving is not an option. Should I re-start my diesel engine weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or just wait the 3 months and re-start then? If so, should I just restart as normal?I do know when I re-start, I must wait until normal temperture is reached prior to shut down, this could take 20 minutes or longer with the rear mounted engine. The radiator covered from the outside will not warm-up as fast as a front mounted engine. Covering this radiator from the inside is not an option due to a shroud covering the fan.: if you are going to leave it sitting they can sit for more than a year and it will still run fine but the only question is the battery they can not stay fully charged so if not using then disconnect the positive side to the battery and when you want to use it just reconnect it this is the way i do to preserve the battery and for added protection add stabil (fuel stabilizer) to diesel if it is going to sit through the winter Edit : a battery charger is a good idea My parent's RV has a solar panel which keeps the battery fully charged but does not use the RV much 1 to 2 times a year had a stabil in it so far no problems but the generator is problematic cause it runs on gas so I had to start it every month to make sure there is no problems with it(run it for 1/2 hour) gas deteriorates faster than diesel even if it has stabil

Q: Hi. We're off grid and therefore installing a 3 phase Diesel generator. Each phase is rated at 20 Amps continuous(23 Amps max). we want to run 3 Split type ACs, one on each phase, plus some other small appliances.Our problem is that each AC has a start up current of 20 Amps, which will trip the safety circuit on the generator everytime it comes on.The ACs running current is only 8 Amps, but jumps to 20 Amps for a split second everytime the Compressor comes on.Is there a simple way to control the start up current on the ACs? I read something about putting a coil of wire on the input of the Compressor. I tried that with a water pump just to check if it works. The surge current was still there.Any ideas if I can use a Capacitor? If yes, can you tell me what capacity I should use? If you give me the formula I can figure it myself. We run on 220-240 Volts, 50 HZ.Thanks for your answers.: Is it too late to switch to a 240 volt single phase generator of the same capacity? This would have a 60 amp capability and would handle the surges with no trouble. I don't see how a capacitor will help. If you are stuck with the 3 phase generator, perhaps you can switch the ACs for ones with 3 phase motors. That will spread the surge over the 3 phases. There are also soft-start ACs .

Q: I'm doing research on trains and Google isn't helping, it's giving me everything but what I need so maybe I'm not posing/wording the question properly or something but a friend told me about this so hopefully I can find the answer.: Almost all diesel's are a electric hybrid. They were first developed in the 1920's. The diesel motor drives a generator which drives the electric motors in the locos axles. This of course was done because the is NO transmission available that can handle the amount of power these engines can make. Generally (depending on the loco) they'll burn anywhere from .5 gpm for the smaller locos to 10 gallons per mile for a large 6600hp loco fully loaded.

Onan approx. 7000w is my preffered choice at this point.: One that runs on propane will be the best as far as pollution goes. Gas gives the more power, diesel would cost too much and of course, pollutes the most. You need to calculate the total wattage you'll be using and buy a generator rated for it. Note that on most generators the advertised wattage is serge wattage and the sustainable wattage is less.

Q: I was wondering if you guys know where to find an electrical generator that does not come with an engine. For example, I have found diesal generators that use diesal fuel to create current. I need something that can create current, but doesn't come with any mechanical input.I basically need an alternator that can produce power on the 30 kilowatt level.: How do you expect to create current without any mechanical input? All generators require a mechanical input, you have to turn the shaft to get an electrical output. Unless you want something like a solar array? Rereading, I think you want a generator without a motor, but with a mechanical input in the form of a shaft that you rotate? Is that correct? Looking on google, I see what you mean, a search for generator 30kW turns up tons of diesel generators, but not just a generator. Perhaps because no one buys these except for the people who make diesel generators. Sorry I can't help. But you may want to rephrase your question. .
