Q: For anyone well up on EMD E and F units: saw a rather frightful picture last night of an F unit slamming into a switcher. not pretty ofcourse. it was on a curve so the F unit fell to her side to the outside of the curve. but not before breaking in half right behind the cab. the picture caption remarked that this was a common feature of the Es and Fs. By design? for safety? or design flaw? first time id seen this type of damage to an F, and certainly have never heard this comment of them. can someone clarify please? The Es and Fs, not so much. But this is true. I have in my collection several derailments, collisions, etc., the aftermath caught on film. The F units did have a tendency to break behind the cab, turning them into an A frame in a collision. Crew protection has been at a low all along, so it probably was a happy albeit unintended consequence. The best example I have is a corn field meet between an F unit consist and a steam switch engine at the far west end of Roseville yard at a place called Antelope, circa 1952-ish. The head end crew of an east train fell asleep, very easy to do, and ran into the yard and ran into the yard engine. Always a handsome loco to begin with, even the major inverted 45 degree V bend looked appropriate for an F unit in Black Widow paint. Actually it was a very conscientious and well known, well respected engineer at the throttle. A union official, a BLE (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers) Local Chairman. Q: I inherited a never used generator from a family estate with no motor. After a tornado here last fall I've decided to build a gen-set with it and I have a few questions. 1) Does the 1800 rpm generator mechanical specification mean that the required engine rpm must be a minimum, maximum 1800 rpm or both? Could it be more or is the chance to ruin it a possibility? I want to stay safe.2) Obviously I'm assuming the 25 hp engine requirement is a minimum but how much bigger can it be without wet stacking problems?3) With these generator output specifications can I power my household without damaging anything?I was planning diesel (still researching brands) and connecting direct. Thoughts?: It means it has to run at 1800 RPM. output voltage and frequency is dependent on RPM. Usually there is a feedback loop that controls the throttle of the engine to maintain the proper RPM and thus the proper output voltage as the load changes. You have to set that up somehow. Don't know what wet stacking problems means. Depends on your household size. A typical US house uses about 1.2 kW average, but there are peaks much higher than that. If your house has electric heat or an electric range or air conditioning, you will have problems.

Q: I have diesel generator and when I loaded it up to 400 KW trip due to low ferquncy in which its total load 905 KW after I check up , I think that because fuel is not increase to feed injuction pump so that I want to know how actuator working ?: By the revolutions of the generator, or the (presuming AC output) frequency of the power generated. If the frequency is low, the revolutions are low. If the revolutions drop off when load is added, or frequency falls, you have a problem. somewhere.

Q: Effects on health, economy, business, the environment, etc.: You know, the effects of diesel emissions is about the same as gasoline emissions. When ethanol burns, it does about the same amount of pollution as diesel fumes do. Healthdon't know Economyif you remove diesel out of the equation, you lose the economy. You cannot haul freight efficiently without diesel power, you cannot operate most generators efficiently without diesel power, etc. The reason why they make such a big deal about diesel emissions is because of the black smoke it produces. It does no greater damage than gasoline emissions do. Plus, if every car ran off of diesel fuel instead of gasoline, prices would be much much cheaper, crude oil would be used more efficiently and there wouldn't be a shortage like there is. PLUSyou would be able to turn that 30-35 mpg car into a 55-60 mpg car if you ran it off of diesel. And I also like to blow black smoke out of my Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel tooits fun, plus a lot of power.

Q: I just purchased a KOHLER generator 500 KVA would it be safe to run at 10 % load for 6-8 hours: 500 kva is a big generator and I am guessing it is diesel. It is safe to run at 10% load however it is not good for the engine itself to make a practice of that. It can lead to lower cylinder temperatures and incomplete combustion over time. It is always better to run at or as close to max load as you can.

Q: I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine .est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley: If they need a scapegoat, you're it. However if it ran for 168 hours on a diesel engine and things were not RE-torqued/double checked

Q: How would i get people to fund a bomb shelter. Of course i will guarantee them a spot for them and there closest 4 family members. I want to stock it and build. I also want to have at least enough food to live for 6 months for at least 25 people. I will also want a ton of water (not literately a ton). Maybe some places to get supplies.Thank you (:: Wow. Um, hang on. This is gonna take a while to write out. Okay. First, you need to have it all planned out before you can get people on board. Have a blueprint of the bomb shelter and explain how it will work. You should hire an architect or engineer for the floor plans. If it's 25 people then you could have 5 rooms with two bunk beds and a single in each. For air ventilation you could have heavy duty industrial air filters. For food, I would suggest those emergency buckets that have 200 meals in them (they sell them at Costco). You should also have a little farm and fish tank in there do constantly have food replensished. When you have it all planned out then you could put an ad in the paper, Craigslist, or just spread the word. Make sure you write up a contract. I can't believe I answered this.
