- Q: have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.
- When you connect the battery, to the automotive alternator, you are making it operational, by activating the rotating magnetic field. It is slowing down, because it is now supplying power to its own field, as well as charging the battery. As the automotive alternator charges the battery, it may pickup speed over time. However, considering the drastic RPM drop when you connected the battery, I believe the power provided by the turbine is inadequate. It may be to small for the application, or the head provided by your water source is too low. Switching to a generator, designed to provide domestic power, i.e., 120/240 VAC 50/60 Hz, will greatly complicate your power-plant. Such devices must be rotated at their design speed, in order to produce power at the correct voltage and frequency. In contrast, automotive type alternators, along with their voltage regulators, whether they are internal or external, are designed to provide constant DC voltage over a wide range of shaft speed. Frequency is not an issue, because these three phase, alternating current generators, output direct current, via full-wave, solid state, internal rectification. Furthermore, any generator requires field current, unless it is a small generator, with exceptionally powerful permanent magnets. I recommend you stay with the automotive generator, along with a large deep cycle battery, and use an inverter to get alternating current. The battery, will be helpful in handling surges, or temporary loads, exceeding the automotive alternator's capacity.
- Q: I think i'm looking for 5000 watts which should cover my fridges and a fan and light, maybe the TV too. I also think I want 120/220v, and one that uses unleaded. What about horsepower and rated output? Are those important? What's the difference between say a Cummins Onan 6500 at Costco (currently $250 off) and a $399 generator of the same wattage on sale at Home Depot for example?
- We went whole hog before the year 2000 in preparation of Y2K. We bought a 6500 KVA Coleman which at an 80% duty cycle should give 5200 continuous watts of power. This would service a refrigerator, an energy efficient small freezer, lights, maybe a TV. Enough to get you through 72 hours of whatever. We only had to fire it up one time, when there was a big outage due to a big power pole being out. (We live out in the country, so we have a Franklin stove with pot hooks, grill, etc., so we can make coffee, cook, etc.) We also keep 75 individual gallons of pure water, enough supplies to handle two weeks, and a continous spring to handle bathrooms. We got our generator from Northern Tool. Another good place is Harbor Freight. Better to be prepared than to be sorry, tomorrow. At the time of the dawning of this new century, we could accomodate all our family and friends for 90 days, and never leave the property.

After a tornado here last fall I've decided to build a gen-set with it and I have a few questions. 1) Does the 1800 rpm generator mechanical specification mean that the required engine rpm must be a minimum, maximum 1800 rpm or both? - 1) The 1800 RPM specification is the speed which will produce the 60 Hz output. This frequency is critical in some of your household electronics, maybe. If the speed is lower than 1800 RPM, the hertz will be lower. If speed is higher, the hertz will be higher. 2) The 25 HP driver is probably sufficient for your generator. A more powerful engine will not return the value for the extra cost of the larger driver. However, a larger driver will give you perhaps a better frequency control. 12.5 KW is (in theory) 12500 / 746 16.75 HP. I'm not sure what 'wet stacking' is. 3) .It will power most households. You may have some problem starting a large AC unit, if you have your electric clothes dryer, stove, oven and a larger lighting load on at the time it comes on. TexMav

- Q: I was wondering if you guys know where to find an electrical generator that does not come with an engine. For example, I have found diesal generators that use diesal fuel to create current. I need something that can create current, but doesn't come with any mechanical input.I basically need an alternator that can produce power on the 30 kilowatt level.
- There was much more success searching with terms like belt driven generator, generator head, or two bearing generator, than with just generator. A practical problem: An AC generator's output frequency is dependent on the shaft speed, so you'll need a governor to keep the speed constant, even as the applied load changes. The packaged engine-generator sets include a governor set-up, does the engine you have include a governor? Many of these generator heads run at 3600rpm, is your diesel going to be happy running for long periods of time at that speed? You could change the shaft speed with a pulley ratio if you use belts, but in any event, the shaft speed must be kept constant at the manufacturers specification to keep the output line frequency and voltage at the desired spec. You will also need a Generator Transfer Switch to transfer household loads from the utility to the generator, if you decide to go that far. In the third reference provided below, notice that some of the pictures show only a lay-out. Some sort of very sturdy mounting plate would be needed for those configurations. If the engine was started with the generator head just laying there, parts would be flying all over the place in short order. Obviously shaft and belt alignments would be critical.

- 1. (i). Each engine should carry the SAME LOAD PERCENTAGE-wise, eg. 80%, to minimize the load change burden on the rest. (Smaller engines may run at full load, since their contribution may go unnoticed.) Since the overall kW bus load is constant, each generator will pickup a percentage of it, by controlling the torque on each prime mover. If it is a steam turbine, by throttling steam flow. If it is a diesel engine, by throttling fuel, and so. (ii). Each alternator should be adjusted to carry the SAME POWER FACTOR, by adjusting excitation accordingly, eg, .85, to avoid stability issues. Running alternators at leading power factors may turn the system unstable and force loss of synchronism 2. Considerable mechanical damage will be caused by incorrect synchronization to windings, shaft and keyways. 3. (i) reducing torque on one a prime mover is done when preparing to take it out of service. This has to be done gradually, so that other machines can pickup the load slowly. When close to unloaded, the generator can be taken off the grid. Power should never be reduced to the point of allowing the generator to be motored, i.e., reverse power flow, which can cause unpredictable damage to the turbine and system instability. (ii) reduced excitation is a very dangerous condition which will cause the power factor to turn leading, i.e., capacitive, weakening the synchronizing torque with possible loss of synchronism and forcing the bus voltage up. .

- Rango is correct.Straight electric would be the way to go.All that diesel does is power a big generator anyways.I don't see it happening in the near future though.The trucks on the highway are wasting much more fuel than the railroads are.One gallon of fuel will move a ton of freight on the rails about 400 miles.A truck gets it about 59 miles. Bob just as a side note we don't have short time rating anymore on locomotives like the SD 70 and the C44ac and theC45ac.They will grind along all day at low speed.
