- Hey, firstly this is a very broad question and I'm not quite sure where to start but here goes. There are several different types of generators, petrol are the cheapest (you could get a cheap one for $500-800) this is probably all you would require for a tree house. Diesel generators are more expensive but they are more reliable and diesel fuel does not deteriorate over time as petrol does. (I know this is too much information) For a 15 year old I would suggest: Plenty of couches, chairs beanbags etc. A easy way to get into the tree house, stairs around the trunk for example. A swing down from the tree house. If you have a pool or a trampoline you get organize so you could jump from a low platform.

- we have a 4,000 or 5,000 that we use at camp it has a honda engine and we run a 50 foot single wide trailer with lights that are from 60watt-100watt a small fridge furnace fan 50in tv water pump and sometimes a medium size microwave but lights will dim if everything is on we have had it for 4 years we keep in in a small 3 sided box with roof and stays outside all year we bought it at lowes

- I don't know about CA but where I live the predominant fuel for permanently installed back up generators is propane. Propane is used because generators can sit idle for weeks or months between power outages. Gasoline and diesel have limited shelf lives and fuel systems can clog with varnishes when not used. Propane has an unlimited shelf life and does not gum up in the carburetor. Natural gas is not available here. In places where it is available natural gas might be preferable to propane. Its impossible to estimate how much fuel you would use in a year. It depends how big your generator is and how many power failures you go through. Most generator manufacturers will tell you how much fuel their products use in an hour.

- Yes it can with the following conditions 1. The diesel engine must have uninterrupted supply of fuel for one month. 2. The engine must have adequate coolant for a month. 3. The engine oil must have the best viscosity as recommended by the manufacturer. 4. The load must not be more than the maximum allowable load for the generator.

- You still have the inefficiency of the gasoline fueled engine. Gas cars break down like this: 1/3 of the energy goes out the radiator as waste heat 1/3 of the energy goes out the exhaust pipe as waste heat 1/3 of the energy actually turns the crank shaft Now subtract from that final third the power to turn the water pump, oil pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning. Then loose some more energy through friction losses in the drive train. If the car has an Automatic Transmission (A/T) add a little bit more loss to turn the fluid pump and the energy loss in the torque converter while the car is stopped. That constant push you feel while the A/T is in gear is lost energy exiting in the form of heat in the transmission fluid. That's why A/T have oil coolers. So only 20% to 25% of the total energy in that gallon of gas actually goes to pushing the car forward. I've seen reports that it is as low as 15%. See the waste?

- Simple. You know the efficiency of the diesel. If you're going to add an electric drive, simply allow for the 10% or so losses in the in the generator - motor drive set vs. the smaller mechanical losses in a gear drive set.
