- There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law

- Water wheels generally turn rather slowly or would fly apart and pulleys would likely be needed (large on water wheel and small at generator shaft). The generator may function well only within a specified range of RPM. Try to determine the rated speed of the generator (or determine the rated RPM of the diesel engine above idle(?) and any gearing or pulley ratios to the generator. That may indicate in advance how practical your match will be. Perhaps the generator can slowly charge a battery (with a given water supply and water wheel) but may not support full load as on the diesel engine. Work out an estimate on paper (including battery and voltage regulator?) before turning actual nuts and bolts.

- Q: i have a 2004 duramax 6.6 diesel truck.does anyone know if there is a converter kit to use the truck as a generator for my house?
- Yes it can but using a truck engine for such a purpose is a bit expensive. There is a kit made out there for such a task, had just read a little bit about it the other day, but dont remember where I saw it. You would actually be better served by investing in a proper stand alone generator. Good luck.
- Q: I am looking for a portable propane generator primarily as a home backup. I have a couple models in mind but have no clue about the quality. they seem to have good reviews, but wanted to ask in here anyways. i'm looking at the Sportsman GEN7000LP or Powerland PD3G8500E Tri-Fuel. anyone have experience with either of these? or can recommend a similarly capable brand/model?
- Why a propane unit? Propane cost more per gallon that gasoline or diesel. If you have access to natural gas it would make more sense.
