- Without getting to technical the current situation was caused by an event driven cascade failure.(think of a line of dominos.the 1st one knocks over the 2nd, etc and they continue to fall until something stops the reaction) The earthquake caused the tsunami. The tsunami flooded the diesel generator facility.(the generators provide back up power to run the cooling system. The secondary back up system failed. (batteries) Electrical power from other sources could not be rerouted back to the stricken site due to the damage to the lines. Everything that could go wrong did and the result is the hydrogen laden steam released into the containment building exploded. And,without constantly circulation the cooling water is/has boiled off and the reactor vessels are beginning to fail. As the other answerer said, read several articles about the event. - Almost all diesel's are a electric hybrid. They were first developed in the 1920's. The diesel motor drives a generator which drives the electric motors in the locos axles. This of course was done because the is NO transmission available that can handle the amount of power these engines can make. Generally (depending on the loco) they'll burn anywhere from .5 gpm for the smaller locos to 10 gallons per mile for a large 6600hp loco fully loaded.

- the air cooled one is a duitz air diesel . they are very reliable about the only maintenance it will ever need is filters and the cooling fins cleaned from time to time. it is lighter than a water cooled version and freezing will not hurt it.

- First make sure the fuel is fresh periodically. Old fuel deteriorates makes it hard it start and run. Second check the oil see if it is clean, check the oil filter too. Third check the fuel filter, change once a year if not used because of bad / old fuel. Forth Check the out put of the engine / voltage / oil pressure / amperage / operating temperature / current fuses / transfer switches are working properly. Listen and make sure the engine is running smooth, no misses. Should be good to go then.

Single model PDF manuals on CD are about $20.Does anyone know if a comprehensive set of shop service manuals is even available for Yamaha Portable Generators? (gas and diesel) I don't mind paying, but I don't want just ONE manual, I want 'em all. That way I don't have to go through this again when a different model Yamaha comes into my shop. - you will need to govern them together, other wise if one is running slightly slower than the other the slower one will act as a motor and not a generator/ alternator. so both must turn at the same rpm speed. then its just wiring configuration delta - delta or Y - Y configurations.
