- Most of the permanent generators we install down here in Tx are natural gas powered that are connected to the utility. As far as name brand try the Kohler and Generac websites. These sites will also give you the gas consumption rates for the different units. They have alot of good info on sizing. Being as you have all electric it will need to be a decent sized unit to back up the whole home. You could always choose to backup only certain circuits and appliances to bring the demand load down and in turn bring down the size of the gen as well. I've installed 17KW to 100KW(Big Custom Home) units on homes. An automatic transfer switch comes with most stand alone generators. These will sense the utility power drop below a certain voltage and tell the generator to start and will automatically switch to generator power. When the utility power comes back on it will automatically switch back over and stop the generator. Most generators will also test themselves weekly. You can set the time and day for this test.One thing I would recommend is the importance of maintenance. Most generators need to be serviced 2 times a year. I've seen homeowners who did not have a good service plan in place be stuck in the dark when the generator did not work or did not work for long.

- NO, you are wrong. Most simple common use welder runs on low voltage high current AC to weld steel, except plasma welder that requires very high voltage DC. Of course, portable welder runs on battery power high current DC where AC power source is not available.

- what you need to do is run that generator with a quality diesel engine and you need to get some commercial companies to advise you the power, amps, and you will need to have some time off the line so your refrigeration will need to be of good quality to stay cold for 5/6 hours while people sleep --- or else you need to have an excellent muffler system for that power plant you probably need to figure how to have some farming so you get the farm discount on the fuel .

- Diesel engines are very similar to gasoline engines. If you have the technical knowledge to work on gasoline engines then the same principles applies to diesel engines as well. I know this is true because I took the course for auto/diesel automotive technician certification. I rebuilt them both along with carburetors, transmissions, starters, alternators, and generators. The only difference I can recall are that the diesel engines required more or less air than the gasoline engines. Of course diesel fuels burns much slower than gasoline. Therefore diesel engines might have additional mechanisms to produce or reduce the quantity of air. That is all.

- The engine can run indefinitely without needing to stop for a rest provided it is properly maintained and cooled. You should change the oil and filters after every 200 hours operating time. Properly maintained you should expect at least 25-30 years operating time from the engine. Neglected and it could need replacing in less than 10. Not sure what 161 gsm/hp-hr means. Unlikely to be grams, but gallons per horsepower hour would be extremely high. Need to look further into it
