- Q: I live in a remote location and my power bill is just ridiculously expensive -- I did the math and it seems like it'll be way cheaper for me to use my solar panel (which currently supplies DC power to a few parts of the house) and a diesel/oil/propane generator (which I have yet to purchase), and just cut off all mains power.Question is, which of these configurations is better?1)-Solar panel-DC generator-Large battery bank-High-wattage inverterResult: AC power throughout the house, using both solar panel and generator to charge the batteries as needed2)-Solar panel-AC generator-Smaller battery bank (for solar panel only)-No inverterResult: AC power when generator running, DC power from solar panel and batteries (I use DC right now for lights and a few basic appliances so I can live without AC power)Or should I do a combination of both, like using an inverter for the solar panel to always provide AC power?Thanks.

- By the revolutions of the generator, or the (presuming AC output) frequency of the power generated. If the frequency is low, the revolutions are low. If the revolutions drop off when load is added, or frequency falls, you have a problem. somewhere.

- Depending on where you live try the on line yellow pages. Especially in large farming areas, like Fresno or Bakersfield, Stockton etc. Their will be equipment parts shops that will help you find what you need if they do not have it.
- Q: How many watts would it take to run a small cabin with just basic lights, mini fridge, stove, maybe a small tv? I was thinking a 6000 watt diesel generator.would running it every day ruin it?
- here is a simple rule of thumb for every hundred watts is a amp so a 6000 watt generator could handle 60 amps of current witch was the standard size fuse box many many years ago. a 100w light bulb uses aprox. 1amp the tv 3 amps give or take 2amps depending on the set. where you need to pay attention is your stove if you power it any other way but eletric you are fine. but if not shop shop and shop some more for a down sized stove. most home stove/ovens and seperate units are 60amps . I am sure it will nut be long be for the combined load of the cabin and part time use of the stove puts a strain on your equipment remember try to go no more than 80% of max watt or amp.

- Do you really mean as electric source and not as emergency back-up? Diesel would probably be the best choice for fuel economy/reliability. (Since it's not for roadway use, you can probably arrange to buy it untaxed.) For back-up power, you'd have to have a lot of long outages to recover the extra cost of the diesel engine set. For 'Prime power' - 24/7 , you're not going to beat electric utility energy rates even with diesel, as the required size generator for your peak loads will be idling most of the time. (Engine/generators are very fuel-inefficient at low loadings. - With a water-cooled unit, you can capture waste engine heat for house heat in winter though.) If by total electric' you mean heating as well, long term, you'd probably save on fuel if you had a smaller 'back-up' unit to carry the smaller home load when the heating system isn't required.
- Q: I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas?
