- You need to google. Try looking up: 1/ The energy density of diesel fuel oil. 2/ The efficiency of a diesel internal combustion engine. 3/ The efficiency of a dynamo (alternator or electrical generator not turbine). Chuck in a bit of ineffieiency for the linkage between the ICE and the dynamo. Then just multiply the energy density of the fuel, by the efficiencies, and out will pop your answer.

The basic principle you are thining of is exactly the principle of a modern Diesel electric locomotive short of the battery bank. As a concept- it is very workable. 3 Phase power has an advantage to it of space and weight savings for the horsepower versus single phase.

- the worst thing for a diesel motor bore is for it not to work, but to run at a constant revs but the electricity is not used. They need to be loadedsay 70% and they will run forever. just stop them to chage the oil. note they cost a fortune in diesel to generate power.

- Many modern cruise ships use a combination gas and steam power or COGAS plant to produce electric power. Much like you cars alternator in your car it converts other power sources into electricity. - It sounds like a really bad idea. Not just noise-wise, but storing petrol or diesel in your apartment is a significant fire risk and possibly breach of your tenancy/lease agreement or giving an insurance company a let-out in the event of fire. Are you sure you don't mean 700va ? this is about the smallest, quietest generator.

- A Diesel generator uses whatever fuel it requires to supply the load being used, plus the efficiency factor.This is controlled by the governor of the engine. If no load, it only uses that fuel required to keep it turning. (Not good for the engine). The rating of a generator is the max the engine can deliver at 100% performance. As the engine gets older, or even WORSE, not maintained. performance (output) drops.

- This is not a good idea. This generator is more than just loud, it poses a serious health and safety threat. The exhaust gasses from the generator have to be vented to the outside or the carbon monoxide they contain will kill you. Diesel fuel is a fire hazard and without proper fireproofing you will end up with a serious fire. Finally, the generator has to be provided with a separate supply of outside air both to ventilate the space to prevent overheating and to supply air for the engine.
