Diesel is a by-product that is refined from trying to make gas from crude oil. Diesel can also be made from soy beans, coal oil, vegtable oils, used cooking oils. The new Blue tec diesel engines exhaust is even cleaner then the air that went into the air filter--(cleans the air as you drive). Diesel doesn't evaporate ,. The old vw rabbits use to get 48 mpg highway---that was 24 years ago, diesel engines have gotten cleaner and more powerful for their size. Generators normally never go above 3600 rpms. So the idea of a engine that has so many ways to make the fuel, fuel that has more energy per gallon, cleans the air as it drives, the engine has plenty of torque for it's size and weight---just makes scents to me that it would make a good hybrid

- the reactors are right on the shore, the tsunami was right there. and yes it did wash over the plants. that's what caused the backup power to fail ! plus several fuel tanks washed away and water got in almost everywhere, however the containment units remained sealed, at least until the hydrogen steam pressure cracked them ! now the NRC reports there is radiation at deadly levels in the immediate area.japan is downplaying the crisis. and due to unconfirmed plutonium pollution, the area may be uninhabitable for 30,000 years or more ?

- All the other answers have been pretty much off base. Why would any submarine need to go greater than 2000 feet? Imagine the pressure on the seawater systems. Tons of leaks, no matter how good it's engineered. But anywayAll depth and speed capabilities of US submarines are classified. All US submarines are currently nuclear powered, but have a diesel generator as a sort of underway emergency electrical power, usually not run. Clean air for the crew's life support, and normal ship's systems is made via an oxygen generator that separates hydrogen and oxygen found in water. However this is inadequate for running the ships diesel. - It's best to connect them at the crank so that they can be timed to fire in a manner that your getting the most amount of power you can. This has been done in applications as small as a .12cc engine all the way up to huge engines that power large ships. The most common place I used to see it is with gas engines for tractor pull. The engines do sync up and will run together when you pair them up thru a clutch
