Q: diesel generator
With practical measurements of voltage and current to the drive motor(s) under stall conditions if possible, or under full acceleration under maximum load, and an assumed motor efficiency. Best bet.
Q: Basically, I want to set up the new homestead off grid and would like to do it with a diesel generator to a DC disconnect, to a charge controller, to a battery bank, to the system meter, to the main DC disconnect, to an inverter, then to an AC breaker panel. Just like a solar array system but using the diesel instead of panels for the first year or two. The home will be using no more than about 22kWH daily. I guess the main question is how do I use a diesel generator in place of 19, 210W solar panels without running the generator 24-7?
That's a lot of energy for off-grid. We're on grid, and don't use 22 kWh a day. Be that as it may, I have heard of people who use a generator in tandem with solar. The solar provides enough to keep a small battery bank charged. In prolonged cloudy spells, they fire up the genny to top off the battery bank. Maybe that would work without the solar. Another approach would be to have a separate circuit on the generator, with the high-power, non-critical systems plugged into it. So if they're going to wash clothes, use power tools, or something like that, they turn on the generator. At other times, the small battery bank is enough.
Q: From what I understand, when the earthquake struck, the nuclear reactors had shut down (control rods were inserted). As a result, the power coming from the steam turbine generators were shut off.At the same time, the earthquake had knocked out Japan's power grid, so power coming from outside the power plant was out. Then the emergency diesel generators went into effect, but was knocked out an hour later as well, and people suspect it was from the tsunami.Would the disaster still have happened if they kept the steam turbine generators running (which means never shutting down the reactor via control rods), and water pumping, instead of shutting it down and letting the backup power direct the emergency cooling?
As you point out it was the double-punch of the earthquake and tsunami that caused the problems at Fukushima. The diesel generators were enough to handle the pumps to cool the reactor but then the tsunami came and swamped them. Shutting down the reactor after an earthquake is standard safety procedure. The diesel generators were designed to be a backup in the event of an earthquake. They functioned fine even after the huge quake. If the quake didn't occur, but instead the planet was just hit by the tsunami, the other planets in unaffected areas of Japan would still be operating so this means the engineers onsite could have jerryrigged something so that the pumps would be powered by the national power grid even if the diesel pumps were knocked out. Not shutting the reactors down would have resulted in even more radiation being released due to the damaged buildings and containment units.
Q: I know that they could re-surface to re-establish a normal supply of air but what about when they were under attack and couldnt surface for long periods of time, wouldnt those engines use up a lot of the oxygen inside the sub?
As others have stated the diesel engines could be used under water only with a snorkle system which wasn't very practical to do if you were indeed under attack. The have ports at the engine room to take in combustion air (oxygen) and to exhaust the combustion gases. The generator/motor was built inline with the drive shaft to the main propeller. As the diesel engine powered the prop it used the generator/motor to charge a bank of batteries. When the sub went under the diesel engines were shut off and the sub was powered by the battery bank. There is a huge switch station just to the rear of the engine room for this purpose.
Q: I will put this generator to power my automated vehicle which have sensors, servo for the steering, motor for the rotation of the rear shaft, laptop for camera vision etc.
A battery powered wheel chair has everything you need. You can buy an old one cheap and fix it up to work as your automated vehicle. Use Lithium Ion batteries for maximum power or one of the new AGM car batteries that provide deep discharge operation.
Q: I'm a student majoring in Architecture one of my class, Building Utilities, needs me to survey a high rise building. In my team, we divided the parts bc there are so many and one of my job is to electricity. Can someone explain to me the meaning of phase, R.P.M, power factor, and (especially) their respective units/numbers from this picture
'Phase' has no units: it is merely a number, in this case 3. It is the number of different live supplies coming out of the generator. On the blue label in your picture, to the right of the word PHASE there is a small clear panel. The 3 followed by a greek letter 'phi' is the number of phases. Then there is '4 W'. This tells you that the generator is wired in 'star' layout with a total of four wires. Three carry the live supplies and one is a neutral wire. Your building will have a lot of wall outlets and some heavy loads; for example, the motors for the elevators. The wall outlets are single phase, connected to only one of the phases from the generator. Heavy loads are often connected to all three phases. 'R.P.M'. is revolutions per minute , which means 'how many times the rotating part of the generator rotates in one minute'. 'Power factor' again has no units. An explanation of what it is? I'll come back to that later (or someone else can) .
Q: Effects on health, economy, business, the environment, etc.
You know, the effects of diesel emissions is about the same as gasoline emissions. When ethanol burns, it does about the same amount of pollution as diesel fumes do. Healthdon't know Economyif you remove diesel out of the equation, you lose the economy. You cannot haul freight efficiently without diesel power, you cannot operate most generators efficiently without diesel power, etc. The reason why they make such a big deal about diesel emissions is because of the black smoke it produces. It does no greater damage than gasoline emissions do. Plus, if every car ran off of diesel fuel instead of gasoline, prices would be much much cheaper, crude oil would be used more efficiently and there wouldn't be a shortage like there is. PLUSyou would be able to turn that 30-35 mpg car into a 55-60 mpg car if you ran it off of diesel. And I also like to blow black smoke out of my Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel tooits fun, plus a lot of power.
Q: I recently had solar Pannels installed. The panels generate enough electricity to power my house during the day. I use a 20kw silent diesel generator to power my house at night. I really hate my power provider PGE. If i tell them to shut off my power, Will they remove that tacky smart meter from my property?
You can have them remove it.
Q: I have a generator in the building I am working on. It appears quite dated, but its stats are as follows: it’s a 415 Volt 3 Phase Diesel Generator. On the plate of the generator:415V3 Phase640KVA520KWPower Factor 0.8902 AmpsSo my question is:We are testing the generator to its full load, now my load is at power factor 1. Would I be correct in assuming that because my load is power factor 1 that the full load of my generator is 640kW not 520kW.Or is it that my actual power loading is rated at 520kW, but that load is allowed to be inductive or capacitive to 0.8.Because it says 900 amps on the plate I am therefore under the assumption that regardless of my load characteristics, as long as I do not exceed 900 amps there should be no problem. Or is it a case that my load can only be 520kW and the highest I can allow the phase to go out is up to 640kVA.Hope that makes sense, ill edit if not. Thanks for reading.
While your generator will handle the amperes as either KVA or KW, unfortunately, the KW rating is is the rating of your driver. You are driver limited, not generator limited.
Q: fuel oil (called also heavy oil) operated engine.can be a dual fuel engine e.g. diesel / fuel oilor engine only or a generator set.generator 150~250 Kvaor engine only 200~300 HPused in working condition
Fuel oil is diesel. You can try a google on used machinery suppliers, they should give you some idea. Depending on where you are you will find someone who can help. Failing that if you already have a gen set, adapt a scania or volvo engine to drive it. Both these engines come in the horsepower range you are asking for and will give many years faithful service providing you look after them. All you need is to securely mount the chosen engine on a 3 channel frame, preferably on manufacturers engine mounts, with a adaptor plate (easily produced by anyone with half an idea) to drive the gen motor. Make sure you have warning lights (pref buzzer) in place for oil press, temp etc and you're in business.
