- Q: I am wondering if you can burn home heating oil in a diesel engine, I have a diesel generator and I am curious if I ran out of diesel say in a bad storm and couldn't get to a station for more could i but some home heating oil in it and run it with out messing things up?
- diesel as far as i know is basically the same as home heating oil. diesel is a bit more refined. my uncle has been driving trucks for about 20 years now and when he was still an owner/opp. he would run home heating oil when diesel prices got high. so It will be just fine
- Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a Kubota Diesel Generator. I have read in many places that the Kubota Diesel engine is the gold standard of Diesel engines. So I'm not worried about that. What i need to know is this, is the generator as a whole dependable? Will over loading it for a few short seconds when the AC compressor kicks in burn it out or shorten its life?Any other insight would be appreciated.Thanks for your answers
- Kubota diesel plants are being used more and more in industry, replacing some of the old standbys like Kohler, Perkins and even Caterpillar in lighter applications. I don't think you will regret buying a Kubota.

- I'm not an expert on this, but I'll give it my best guess. To try to point you in the right direction. First, you need to know the torque of this magnet. 1 horse power 0.74569 kilowatts So to get a 1 kilowatts, you need 1.35962 horsepower. The motor will have a certain efficiency. I do not know if this is factored in to the motors power rating, however if the efficiency is, say, 90%. Then you will need to divide the horse power by 0.9 to get the correct horse power rating. Is this a motor part of a diesel / fuel generator, or is it part of a wind turbine / water turbine?
- Q: How much power does the generator from the diesel need to produce in order to bring the train up to running speed?
- That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

- It is not good to run a Diesel generator throughout the year without stopping. It requires regular stopping for maintenance, at least once a week for cleaning or replacement of oil filters and replacement of parts.THE SHUTDOWN MAY LAST 8 OR !6 HOURS DEPENDING ON THE PARTS TO BE REPLACED.

- For used medium size portable temporary units about $100 to $150 US per KW. Plus the required transfer switch and permits and inspections if you intend to power your house with it. This is for a manual start gasoline powered unit. As you add options the price goes up and may triple in hurricane season in the path of the storm. The quietest unit I've found are Honda, but they are more expensive. Any unit smaller than 15KW should be considered a short term unit good for maybe 2000 hours of run time. A 15 KW unit should be a permanent installation with a mounting pad and at least a 7 day supply of fuel on site. For this a licensed qualified professional electrical contractor should be consulted. As convenient as they may be, they can get to be expensive to install and operate.

- I think as long as the lines are cut, there should be no problem. I've seen plenty of abandoned properties in which the meter is removed. FYI, though. If you stay on the grid , the company will buy any excess.

- It sound like you want to be able to drive the truck away also? So you need a power take off. You would bolt a large electrical generator (just the electrical par, no motor) and then have someone weld a connector to your driveshaft in such a way that you can switch it from rear-end to generator mode and in generator mode it would spin the rotor of the generator. With the HP output of that truck you could light up at least 3 houses. It would be cheaper, easier, and safer to just get a stationary generator from Lowe's and have them install it
