Q: Hello friends.I had to make a list of equipment for a civil construction company. Among the equipment were generator and diesel engine. For generator, i am very clear that it is used for alternate power generation in case of electricity un availability. What is the purpose of diesel engine? Where is is used? Guide me please.
Just about every piece of equipment powered by an internal combustion engine found at a civil construction site is powered by a diesel engine. Things such as scrapers, loaders, track hoes, dozers, dump trucks, rollers, and even electric generators are powered with diesel engines.

no expert on the rail industry but i dont believe any US company uses a strictly diesel freight train any more. they have all been diesel electric for awhile now. as far as carbon they should still be lower than a comparable amount of semi's

There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law

Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

Q: For a new observatory in the Andes at 17,000 feet, we need to provide power continuously for 4 months. Requirement is 208VAC, 3 phase, 10 kW. The site is accessible by large truck, but connecting to the power grid is out of the question. We are thinking diesel generators and large fuel tanks. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
As most of the answers' say. A diesel / alternator set would be the best solution. The diesel engine must have a turbo charger to allow the engine to operate successfully at that altitude. However, I doubt that the engine would need to be rated at 30kW it may need to be somewhere around 15-20kW to drive the alternator into a standing load of 10kW. Generally I size the alternator at 1.25 of the standing load, so the alternator would need to be around 15kVA, provided the power factor is around .8. You will need to have an electrical engineer to check your load factor and determine what P.F. can be expected. If your load has several variable frequency or DC drives, this could cause a low PF. Therefore the kVA rating of the alternator would be higher. Also at the altitude, cooling of the alternator could be a problem due to the thin air. The generator manufacturer may be able to provide an oversized fan assembly to compensate for this. Best of luck, your quest is very interesting. Q: here in the town i live in we recently had an avalanche take out power transmission lines from our hydro dam in the time it takes them to repair those 90% of our power is coming from diesel generators(you should have cringed there) causing the price per kWh to go up 500% for what might be the next 3 months.currently i make enough that i can live with a bill 5 times higher than im used to, but a couple of years ago that would have got me kicked out of my apartment because there was no way in hell i could find an extra 300 bucks a month with a week or two notice.its been a big deal here, but we are notorious complainers, so im wondering if that situation would cause you to write letters to editors and complain to everyone who will listen all day long?
My Electric bill in high season is around $350/Month If it was 500% more it would be $1750/Month If it was me I would tell them what to do with their power and use candles, or move in with someone else.
Q: I been thinking, and it seems to me our future vehicles would be best suited with a small 1~ liter diesel engine turning a generator to power 4 electric motors at the wheels of the car/truck, just like locomotives use. Advantages would be significantly increased fuel economy, AWD, no transmission and axle weight(offset by weight of batteries, longer lasting diesel engine, easier and cheaper to repair due to small engine size, fewer moving parts, and decreased complexity, regenerative braking, significantly reduced emmissions, less noise, no idling when not moving.Seems the advantages would vastly outweigh the disadvantagesDoes anyone build such a vehicle?
