- Q: Any help regarding my question would be greatly appreciated.I have a 1991 Prevost Marathon Mirage LE Luxury Motorcoach and I am wanting to remove the Engine (Detroit 8v92) is this a job to hard for a reasonably experienced Diesel mechanic to conquer? I have all the space in the world in my game room to do this. Just wanting to know if the engine is on a slide track and it slides out (I have seen other coaches do this) or do i have to totally unmount the engine to get it out to where I can work on it? I know this is a stupid question and I don't know exactly how to word it. But any help regarding my question again would be greatly appreciated.any diesel mechanics out there? Is there a video posted somewhere on the web that may show a backyard mechanic doing this so it may enlighten me. lol

- With respect, you're actually asking how to design and build your own engine. There are entire books on the subject, and you need plenty of diagrams as well. That's far beyond the scope of an answer on here. But if all you need is a 12v regulated dc power supply why not just get a model car or boat engine and see if you can hook it up to a car alternator from a scrapped vehicle via a suitable pulley gearing? It certainly won't be quiet though, and you'll need to ensure that the engine is either fan or water cooled and that there's a suitable exhaust outlet. Model diesel engines aren't very large, but there are larger scale copies of the old British Mills engine design made in India, and also various websites which give you details or sell you plans on how to build your own. Usually they have lapped pistons so don't need the complication of piston rings.

- Solet me get this straight You want to use a heating element to heat the water in a steam locomotive to boil the water and turn the pistons, etc, etc. That's all good. Sothe heater will be electric right? Okso you are going from (power source energy, batteries, combustion engine, etc.) to electric energy(heater) to heat energy (water/steam) That is three different conversions, very inefficient, and actually useless. Heating water is very inefficient. It takes a lot of joules to bring the temperature of liquid water up. Ok, so if the heater is electric, something powers it right? But if you have a generator powering the heatercan't the generator itself just power the train? That's what a diesel locomotive is. Just think of it like a car engine hooked up to a train. Except, most of the time, it's diesel electric, meaning a diesel generator uses heat energy to make mechanical energy which turns a crankshaft which creates electric energy which drives electric motors on the axles of the train. Steam trains are very inefficient. Plus, the large number of systems it would need would require lots of maintenance, and require everyone from plumbers to electricians to mechanics to maintain, lots of money and time. Of course, I don't know what a metal heater is, I assumed all of them are, metal, like the ones used to boil water.

- I am not sure what you are really asking about the operation of a diesel generator. You start the engine and connect the electrical load to the generator buss. If you are connecting to a grid or existing power system then you need to match the frequency of the grid. As to advantages and disadvantages, you need to state what you want to compare it to and how large the generator or system is.

- There are several models of the 20K Westerbeke. Can you post up which model you have? It could be as simple as an adjustment. The actuators do not generally fail. However, if you have a lot of hours, say 2000, then the actuator spring may be worn out. Please post up your model and I will see what I can do. Also you can email me.
- Q: I want to build a deisel generator that electrolizes water to make oxygen and hydrogen to increase fuel efficiency. Then I want to make an algae bioreactor and extract the fuel from the algae to power my diesel generator. What is the smallest engine that can support this? Do I need fuel injection or can the oxyhydrogen come in through the air intake? As I understand with oxyhydrogen added you can acquire a 100% fuel efficiency.
- I'll guess HOH can be used, with all sizes of diesel and gasoline motors, likely even in gas turbine motors and jet engines, BUT it as near zero utility for any of them. Even the fractional hp model airplane motors should work. More than a pint of HOH Brown's gas is a serious explosion hazard, so be sure production is reduced while the motor is idling.

- It is about inertia and storage. Hybrid is a new technology and it is more efficient, but they lack performance something the American car market still craves. Did you know that all Diesel locomotives in the US are hybrid and have been for decades? The diesel engine charges batteries and electric motors provide the actual drive.
- Q: i could only find a weight on one website and it said around 8,000 lbs. This one is rusted out and were planning on taking it in for scrap normally we would cut it up and take it in but this thing is a monster im thinking about renting a flatbed if it is 8,000 it would be worth it. The cooling coil and somekind of box with all the controls has been removed but they probobly werent any more then 500 lbs
- That weight should be very close minus loss to rust. I would call a scrapyard first to get an idea of what they are paying, especially because part of it is a diesel engine and there are guidelines with some yards how they will accept machinery, such as clear of any fluids. The copper or aluminum wires and generator cores will probably be most valuable parts and might be worth removing and forgetting the rest depending on what the scrap yard says about the engine and rusted steel shell is worth. It will be a hard move, even for a flatbed truck because the little winch will have to pull that generator which is super heavy and dead weight. Final thing to look into is whether there is any value in any part of it. This is a very popular size generator and is still produced today except with Cummins diesel engine, maybe someone has an older one with same engine and their block is cracked!?
