Q: can somebody explain to me electrical power distribution for jackup rigstarting from the engine to generator then bus,MCC1,MCC2,SCR: Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

Q: How to calculate fuel average consumption hours/liter?: Divide the number of hours the motor ran by the number of gallons used. ex. 100 hours run time divided by 5 gallons used 20 hours per gallon. Hint - sometimes if you oversimplify your question, people don't understand what information you are asking for.

Q: I own a Chinese made diesel generator. 10HP, 5kW, which recently stopped putting out power. The generator head has three separate power outputs; 120VAC (#1) 120VAC (#2) and 12VDC for battery charging. All three ceased output simultaneously. I've tried re-exciting or flashing the alternator, which didn't do anything other than make it knock when it generated a magnetic field.I've been told my voltage regulator may have failed, but I have no knowledge of how the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) on the high-voltage side may work to verify.Ideas? Thanks!: Some have safety fuses or circuit breakers to safeguard Voltage spikes. Check also for a switch which enables the generator once the deisel moter has been started. Q: creating steam turbines that can run on ANYTHING to power the electric generators in modern engines?: Bio fuels are a net energy loss, so converting to diesel would be a step backwards. Even if you could create a steam engine that would run on anything, it would still require fuel. And burning this fuel would create smoke. AKA pollution. To deal with this pollution you'd be required to put massive filter systems on the engines, which makes the engines much heavier which in turn makes them need more power and more fuel. Neither is a good solution.

Q: How many watts would it take to run a small cabin with just basic lights, mini fridge, stove, maybe a small tv? I was thinking a 6000 watt diesel generator.would running it every day ruin it?: 6000 watt would probably cover it, especially if you bought a gas stove. Generators are designed to run for long periods, but I would suggest you shut it down at night - it would probably be too loud to sleep anyway. Personally I would also tend to install batteries and an inverter and some small solar panels too - you could get away with a smaller generator to just charge the batteries but it would probably cost more overall.

Q: Having a basic background in electric and family moving into a remote prefab home with no electric, water, or gas, I decided to help. House and work shed electric requirements are simple, totaling a possible 5kwh at a given time to the shed, and 7kwh to the home. Obviously the home will have constant electric requirements (fridge, fans, etc). I cannot imagine it is economical nor efficient to run a diesel generator 24/7 for energy production as needed. Solar panels have storage batteries. Can I use 12v or 18v, or an industry specific battery to only operate the generator for several hours a day for storgae of power? A yacht shorter than 40 feet is often gasoline powered. None are battery powered. All large yachts have diesel generators which are used to generate electric power for the on board electrical systems. When a yacht is docked it usually obtains power from the shore using a large cable that connects to shore power supply systems. Yachts with sails usually also have a single small diesel engine that allows them to maneuver in harbors and other places where sailing might be dangerous or impossible.
