The velocity of the exhaust gas is highly dependent on the size of the exhaust pipe. A smaller exhaust pipe, a much higher velocity --- a larger exhaust pipe, a much slower exhaust gas velocity. A 2 exhaust pipe would have about 2.25 times the velocity of a 3 pipe. The exhaust velocity is highly dependent as well on the RPM of the generator. Double the RPM, and there is much higher pressure, and much higher exhaust gas velocity. An attached article mentions that the exhaust velocity in some unspecified gasoline powered car --- and at some unspecified RPM --- is about 240 to 260 feet per second. autolounge /tech/exhaust.html

Q: and diesel generator and ATS that switches between two electrical sources ??: There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. Q: I know in some cases Electric companies will buy energy from someone who's solar panel's/wind turbines are overproducing. I think the system's have to be properly grid tied, i.e. either installed by or inspected by someone from the power company. I know that they don't pay much, but if you had a diesel generator running on waste vegetable oil.like if you made an arrangement with a restaurant to pick up their waste oil for them, it would be nice to be able to do so on a regular basis instead of going to them every so often saying Hey, I ran out of oil, I need some more. Thanks!: Yes, you can sell energy to the grid but it's often not cost-effective. You have to look at your equipment and operation cost, as well as the cost per kWh that your utility pays. Also, WVO is not as easy or free to come by as it used to be, as demand is now much higher. Restaurants usually don't give away their waste oil for free any more, as fuel companies now pay restaurants to pick up their used cooking oil. You can buy grid-tie inverters that plug into the wall outlet for reasonably small amounts of generation (about 1500 watts or less). For larger amounts of generation, you'll want a professionally-installed inverter and meter. The cost of electricity is so inexpensive per kWh that even if you did manage to source free WVO, the income from selling the electricity likely wouldn't even cover your costs to set up and maintain the generation equipment. Your system would also likely produce more emissions per kWh than the utility generation stations. You may have to deal with legislation for the emissions and/or noise, depending on how populated your area is.

The starting can be done electrically or pneumatically. Pneumatic starting was used for some engines. Compressed air was pumped into the cylinders of the engine until it gained sufficient speed to allow ignition, then fuel was applied to fire the engine. The compressed air was supplied by a smallauxiliary engine or by high pressure air cylinders carried by the locomotive. Electric starting is now standard. It works the same way as for an automobile, with batteries providing the power to turn a starter motor which turns over the main engine. In older locomotives fitted with DC generators instead of AC alternators, the generator was used as a starter motor by applying battery power to it.

Q: here's the thing.Imagine that I have a generator that uses diesel as the fuel. then consider following two cases.Case 1 - using one 1kW bulb for one hourCase 2 - using ten 100W bulbs for one hourI know both cases consume a same amount of power that is 1kWH.but I THINK the demand (which is measured in kVA or just kW) is higher in the second case. (is it??)so my question is that, does the generator burn a same amount of fuel at both the cases regardless of higher demand in second case?? and I'd much obliged if you can say how??: If that is a 1 kw incandescent bulb, the generator may shut it's self off when you try to turn on the bulb, but keep running if you turn on the 100 watt bulbs one at a time. That is because the lamps draw about ten times as much current the first millisecond. Fuel consumption is the same, with in the tolerance limits of the bulbs, and other minor errors.
