Q:How much power does the generator from the diesel need to produce in order to bring the train up to running speed?
That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .
Q:Diesel Tank for a generator set
The tank shall be a steel tank, for a generator set usually it is very simple, use steel galvanized sheets of 3 to 4 mm thick and must be welded joints
Q:I have a generator in the building I am working on. It appears quite dated, but its stats are as follows: it’s a 415 Volt 3 Phase Diesel Generator. On the plate of the generator:415V3 Phase640KVA520KWPower Factor 0.8902 AmpsSo my question is:We are testing the generator to its full load, now my load is at power factor 1. Would I be correct in assuming that because my load is power factor 1 that the full load of my generator is 640kW not 520kW.Or is it that my actual power loading is rated at 520kW, but that load is allowed to be inductive or capacitive to 0.8.Because it says 900 amps on the plate I am therefore under the assumption that regardless of my load characteristics, as long as I do not exceed 900 amps there should be no problem. Or is it a case that my load can only be 520kW and the highest I can allow the phase to go out is up to 640kVA.Hope that makes sense, ill edit if not. Thanks for reading.
While your generator will handle the amperes as either KVA or KW, unfortunately, the KW rating is is the rating of your driver. You are driver limited, not generator limited.
Q:I recently purchased a CAT turbo diesel generator. I checked the oil and it had water in it. After a good bit of clear water came out the oil started to drain. It could best be described as the color and consistency of a vanilla milk shake. I was told by a friend to mix some diesel with the oil and agitate it to mix it up, then to drain the oil. After the system was clear, i put fresh oil in until it reached the fill line. I started up the engine and let it run for about two hours. It was smoking white from the exhaust stack. I have also noticed that there is oil dripping from the exhaust stack. There also seems to be oil leaking from the turbo. Could this oil leak be causing the white smoke? I remained curious so i grabbed an infrared thermometer and started checking around. The exhaust manifold around the number 1 cylinder was about 100 degrees cooler than the other 3 cylinders. What the heck is going on? help would be much appreciated!
you are getting water in the combustion chamber you have a leaking head gasket or blown head gasket or a cracked head smoke coming from exhaust that is white is actual steam from 1 one cylinder there is where you problem lies and my be a bad turbo oil leaking from it and exhaust
Q:Everyday I learn a little more about boating. I have asked a couple question on here. Looking back they seem a little stupid now! I want to purchase a boat capable of being a live-aboard and be able to do coastal waters as well as the inter-coastal waterway. So far what I think I've learned is that a trawler with a pilothouse or fly-bridge will offer the most usable space. I've also figured size is important when talking to marinas. Today's question is, what items would you desire to have? Generator, auto, electric or manual toilet, gas or electric stove and refrig., gas or diesel power, etc. Back to the book store tomorrow! Thanks in advance.
Yeah generator would be nice. I prefer gas fridges and stoves, propane is easily available and you can carry it along. You going trawler? Then diesel. Skip the book store and get out on the water. When you have spent some time on the water all these answers will become clear. You will learn so fast it will be scary. Best of luck and enjoy the season.
Q:Hello,I'm doing a research project that requires me to report on five ethical missteps made by engineers/staff at the Fukushima plant that caused the disaster. I'm having trouble with this research because most of the information i'm finding centers around the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused so much damage. Can anyone point me toward any human errors that centered around poor ethical judgement?
If you just google human error fukushima you're going to get (a) a few articles from the summer of 2011; (b) a rash of articles from July, 2012; (c) a rash of articles from Oct-Nov, 2013; and (d) a rash of articles from last week (Feb 2014). Whether all will cite ethical missteps is unknown to me.
Q:From what I understand, when the earthquake struck, the nuclear reactors had shut down (control rods were inserted). As a result, the power coming from the steam turbine generators were shut off.At the same time, the earthquake had knocked out Japan's power grid, so power coming from outside the power plant was out. Then the emergency diesel generators went into effect, but was knocked out an hour later as well, and people suspect it was from the tsunami.Would the disaster still have happened if they kept the steam turbine generators running (which means never shutting down the reactor via control rods), and water pumping, instead of shutting it down and letting the backup power direct the emergency cooling?
As you point out it was the double-punch of the earthquake and tsunami that caused the problems at Fukushima. The diesel generators were enough to handle the pumps to cool the reactor but then the tsunami came and swamped them. Shutting down the reactor after an earthquake is standard safety procedure. The diesel generators were designed to be a backup in the event of an earthquake. They functioned fine even after the huge quake. If the quake didn't occur, but instead the planet was just hit by the tsunami, the other planets in unaffected areas of Japan would still be operating so this means the engineers onsite could have jerryrigged something so that the pumps would be powered by the national power grid even if the diesel pumps were knocked out. Not shutting the reactors down would have resulted in even more radiation being released due to the damaged buildings and containment units.

Q:I have a bunch of old diesel left over from y2k, a family friend stored 10k gallons and its turned a brown color, it dosent small funny at least to me, still looks red if you put it up to the light but it is not vivid red like it used to be it has a dingy brown color. It was originally RED diesel.Im afraid to run this in my generator, is there any additive I can add to clean it up or fix it that you have PERSONAL experience with.?

Q:Ford fomoco four cylinder diesel engine with a symes pump ( i think ) is there anyone out there who knows anything at all about them or has found a web site or knows anywhere to get parts or has any engine numbers i would be very great-full.
Sounds like a ford industrial unit. There SHOULD be a number or number plate somewhere on the block, generator, and/or frame. A possible search, assuming it is a generator unit, would be the GENERATOR manufacturer.
