Q: I did change water pump before but not on wv beetle?: If okorder , I have serious doubts about your doing a timing belt which has to come off and go back on to do the water pump. I also can't picture a water pump going bad in under 15 years or 150,000 miles. Spendy job, so please be sure before disassembling. Q: there is a knocking noise coming from the water pump pulley..i think, the pulley also wiggles when its running. If that's what is wrong, how long do i have to fix it and is it hard and expensive to fix?: No it isn't hard to fix, first loosen the little bolts on the water pump pulley, then take the belt off, then unbolt the water pump and take pulley off old pump, clean off old seal from block, put on new seal, you may have to use gasket maker or silicone, install new pump, and bolt pulley on to new pump, then reinstall belt. Oh I forgot you will have to drain the antifreeze before you start, and refill it after you are done! Start the car and let it warm up and look for leaks, if you see a leak you didn't get it sealed properly and will have to repeat the sealing process and antifreeze. Takes an hour or so to do!

Q: If the water pump does not get water to pump, will it be burnt out? If so, then can it be fixed? And if it doesnt get water to pump, what exactly happens to it?: Running a pump without water to cool it will cause it to overheat. Bearings fail and the insulation on the wiring in the motor burns. Q: This only happens while I am running water. I can hear the pressure switch clicking on and off the whole time I am doing dishes, laundry, ... You should add water to the system to create suction.

Q: can a water pump pumping out air instead of water?: it depends on the design of the pump - centrifugal pumps tend to like water cooling their seal surfaces, unless they are specifically designed to pump air as well as water. Positive displacement pumps also typically use the pumped liquid as thier sealing surface cooling. Both can be designed such that cooling is provided externally, and pump air as well as water (there are both kinds used as air compressors). A typical submersible pump would not pump air very long - minutes to hours at best.
