Q: So my daughter's car is an 02 Accord manual with about 127k miles. It's making a squeaky noise which apparently is the belts. The dealer says they're too tight, but are in okay condition. They want to change the water pump and adjust the belts for $750. This seems a bit steep to me. Does the water pump need to be changed if it's working properly? How much should it cost to adjust the belts? I'm thinking she should find a more reasonable shop. What are your thoughts?
The water pump is driven by the timing belt. I do the water pump and timing belt with the pulleys and tensioner for around $600. If the drive belts are making noise try dusting some talcum or body powder on them. Don't use belt dressings, they never work.The timing belt should be replace around 90,000 miles so if that hasn't been done you should have it replaced or you will bend all the valves when the timing belt jumps or breaks. That's a 14 year old vehicle and the timing belt needs attention.

Q: I have a Goulds JPlus water pump inside my home. Last night, my wife and I heard it going on and off repeatedly when we went to bed. I have two shallow wells hooked up to it, so I switched wells even though I didn't believe the one I was on was dry (it was supplying H2O fine).Still no luck, so I turned it off at the breaker and shut off the valve between the tank and pressure switch. Today, the pump pressure gets to between 50 and 60, then goes off. It then loses pressure v ery quickly (approx 10-20 seconds) and goes back on when the pump switch hits the lower threshold. It sounds like the water is running back through the pump and out of the house when it goes off unless I turn the shut off valve I spoke of earlier. I changed the pressure switch and no difference.I can, however, turn it on and shower, flush, etc. I just then have to go down and turn the pump back off.Any help would be greatly appreciated!
If there is space try to hit the head of the bolt with a hammer, the shock from the hammer blow will help you to loosen the bolt. Failing that the next thing to try is an allen key socket, with this you can use a long strong arm to apply extra torque to the bolt. Be carefully not to open up the head of the bolt as this can be a major pain. If you still cannot get it out then if the water pump is to be replaced try to get an angle grinder on the bolt to cut its head off. Once the head is off and the pump is out you can use a stud extractor of a good vice grip to remove the stub of bolt left over.

Well, you can definitely go to an independent mechanic and knock that price down to about $3000 for an engine replacement. I would definitely get a 2nd opinion on damage to the engine, I never heard of the water pump failing causing the timing belt to break. I guess you kept driving when the temperature gauge was rising and caused the engine to seize. Another shop may also be able to rebuild the damaged engine which could save you a lot of money. I don't know if you bought the Sorrento used, but if you bought new, now you know why a loan longer then 5 years is a no no no.

Forget the tank. It would have to be watertight and maintain 35-40 lbs. of pressure. There is always a way to run the line. Mine goes thru the outside wall and attaches to the hose faucet. I used a y connecter with double shut offs. Use 1/4in copper if you go outside or under the house. Rodent's love to chew on the plastic

you need the GSR/Type-R water pump. This is one of the major causes of LS/VTEC failure. The GSR/Type-R has 22 teeth while the LS/GS has 19 teeth. The extra teeth cause it to spin faster pushing more water through the system. Any time you change something related that uses the timing belt, I ALWAYS install a new timing belt, and tensioner. That way there are no worries later.
