- Q: I'm wondering if it's better to brake when slowing or to downshift and then brake? When I bought my first motorcycle I was told that I should always downshift then start braking as it was better for the bike. I didn't think about it then but these days I have been wondering. I am sure that downshifting saves on brake pads but is it harder on the engine?
- It depends. When you're coming to a stop, brakes are better because they're easier to control. But you have to shift down anyway because you're going to want to start out again in first. So if you have room, if you have a ways to go to get to the stop sign, you can let the clutch out in some of the gears as you shift down and that will help slow you down. On a curvy road you often want to downshift a gear, maybe two, to go around a curve. If you downshift and then let out the clutch, that helps slow you down, and then you're in the lower gear to accelerate smoothly out of the curve. If you're going down a long grade, of course you downshift to keep from having to 'drag' your brakes, which heats them up and makes them fade, plus it wears them out. Its not harder on the engine, though it does cause wear on the clutch, especially if you do it clumsily.
- Q: I have a 2007 Yamaha R6s. It has 4000 miles on it. I have done the 1st 600 mile service and the 4000 mile service. The dealership didn't say anything about the brakes when I picked up the bike. The brakes feel just as good as when I first got it. I was looking around and dediced to check out the front brake pads. It seems like they are thin. Is this how they are supposed to look? How long do front motorcycle brake pads last on an average.
- Brand new brake pads are thin when compared to an automobiles pads, around 1/4 inch. If you can still see the pad, that indicates that there is plenty of it left. there may be wear indicators that will sqeal and warn you that the pads need changing. If you use the brakes modestly you should be able to get at least 10,000 miles out of them. If you are in doubt, just wheel by your local shop and ask. It will give you another excuse to ride!
- Q: Leaving my motorcycle outside?
- The motorcycle is made to withstand the weather, it will be fine.
- Q: .and can you use either kind?
- Always when i submit a question, even if its the easiest one, nobody can give me a good informed answer here. what happened to people that actually make the effort to answer
- Q: I'm 16 almost 17 years old. Looking to buy a bike so i can drive it to school and work. This would be my 1st bike. Many people told me get a ninja 250 and there nice bikes but can they handle the highway? I would be going 60-70 mph. Would i be shaking around if wind its me? Someone said a suzuki katana.? Looking to spend $3500 but mainly wanna spend under $2500 on a used motorcycle. I weight 150lbs and Im 5-9. Please tell me reason for what your saying
- There are several factors to consider when you are a new rider looking to purchase your first motorcycle: 1) Engine size Motorcycles are like ladders - you want to take things one step at a time. A new rider regardless of their previous experience with motor vehicles (dirt bike, snow mobile, atv, etc) should keep their first bike's engine size under 650 cc's and ideally 500 or less. A motorcycle's throttle and brakes are very sensitive. You need to master operating the controls as well as your balance, decision making skills, etc first before upgrading your bike's power. Sure you may find a 250 boring after a few months - but have you truly mastered it? 2) Cost Motorcycle riding cost a fair bit of coin. Not only do you have to consider the cost of the bike itself but also your gear and insurance. You mentioned you are nearly 17. I will save you the shock when you are on the phone with your insurance agent - until you are 25 you are going to be paying through the nose for insurance (your yearly fees will most likely be more than the cost of your bike). If you have the money - great. Make sure to factor that into your budget. Consider it part of the bike's cost. Same goes for your riding gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, boots). 3) Bike style This is a personal preference. Although you will find a lot of people (myself included) recommending the ninja 250 as the prefect beginner bike - you may not want a sports bike, you may like cruisers instead. If you live in a rural area - a dirt bike may be more suitable to your riding style. Try several types of bikes (if you can muster a test drive out of the owner). Sit on them in the show room - see what's comfortable for you. 1) engine size under 500cc 2) look at the total cost of the bike (bike, insurance, gear, maintenance) 3) find a style that suits you 3) Good luck and safe riding
- Q: When downshifting on a motorcycle is it possible to put in neutral to save on the extra wear and tear of the gears rather than go down each gear according to your speed? I mean like when I‘m driving my car instead of downshifting from say 5th to 4th gear I put it in neutral and just put it in whatever gear I need when I know what speed I‘m gonna be doing at that moment like say 3rd gear or what not. Plus when first riding a motorcycle what‘s the hardest thing to learn to do when riding one? Like say a deer jumps out in front of you when your riding. How do you keep from flying over your handle bars if you gotta come to a abrupt stop? Thanks in advance for all who answer.
- 1) Take the MSF course! Would you try to solo an airplane without having taken lessons first? 2) Budget for some safety gear. You don't have to spend huge bucks to get good, new gear. Helmet $100, Gloves$25 for summer gloves or $40 for winter, Jacket $150 with armor, boots $40-$100 and you can use better hiking boots. After you've been riding a couple of months you'll have a list of other gear you'll want. 3) Keep learning and practicing. Read the moto mags, like Motorcyclist, Cycle World, Two Wheels Only (props to the Britmags!). Not the TA rags. Learning doesn't stop until after Death, which can happen from not learning. 4) I don't know what side of motorcycling/scootering/etc. you're attracted to, but do remember that the street is not a race track. There are no corner workers to show you a flag for a hazard ahead, animals are not cleared from the road, people don't have to know squat about driving to get a license (and they really are out to get the biker), and the road isn't glass smooth.
- Q: How to destroy the motorcycle brake system
- Forced smashing cars and other smashed to destroy the broken.
- Q: hello 9i have an older honda motorcycle and it runs but has been sitting for awhile. the back tire seems to be locked up, any ideas how to get it to roll?
- The right way is actually to remove the rear wheel and check the brakes. I would also remove the rear wheel seals and pull the bearings. If not changing them out completely, I would clean and repack them and replace the seals. Also, check the front. Be safe!
- Q: Pedal motorcycle stepless speed principle, the main reason for the large fuel consumption is the drive system to reduce the efficiency, or what other reasons, thank you Xiangjie!
- Scooters with its beautiful appearance, luxury, style and easy to operate and much urban people love. But the scooters generally exist fuel consumption, high engine temperature, mechanical wear and tear of the shortcomings, whether it is the Taiwan version of KWANG YANG (standard GY6 machine), or to GY6 blueprint for the design and manufacture of 1P52QM gasoline engine assembly of many domestic brands 125 / 150 (1P57QM) Ml scooter fuel consumption are generally in the 3.0-5.0L / 100Km or so. How can the fuel price rise and the country may implement fuel tax today, reduce motorcycle fuel consumption and user use costs, this issue has placed in front of us. The author in the more than a year, relying on the bridge West Street (China Qingqi Group, China Geely Group) Leshan Sunshine Motorcycle Technical Service Station, part of the GY6 series of scooters for fuel economy and technological transformation practice, Significant fuel efficiency, so that fuel consumption and emissions are reduced. Here we introduce some of the experience and understanding to colleagues, hoping to play a role, lead to more and better fuel-efficient program.
