Usually in a couple of days. If the light is still on, the mechanic is either unethical or incompetent and sold you a gas cap that you didn't need. The very next thing that I would replace if I were you would be my mechanic. It could also be just as easily be a leaking O ring in a EVAP system line, it could be a loose fitting, it could be a damaged EVAP system line. It could be that the mechanic sold you the incorrect gas cap. Some of the better OBD 2 diagnostic scan tools have the ability to erase the trouble codes which reset the check engine light. The cheap scan tools used by the auto parts stores usually can not erase codes, just read them. What I would do if I were you. Take the car to a different reputable mechanic. Explain to them what has happened. See if they will erase the trouble code for you. If there is no problem, the light will stay out. If the check engine light comes back on, there is still a problem with the EVAP system. For now, you can safely drive the vehicle with this trouble code. This will not affect the way the engine runs in any way. This is a emissions issue. If there is actually a problem it means that you are venting gasoline vapors from the fuel tank. However, this should eventually be addressed.

Q: I was driving to work this morning, and my engine light came on. I have a 2001 Cavalier 2.2L 4 Speed Automatic with a little over 80,000 miles on it. The car was running fine, but then the light came on, and I freaked. I opened my manual, which said one of the problems could be due to my fuel cap not placed on properly. When I got back home, I checked, and sure enough, it was loose. However, when I went out later on, the light was still on and has not gone away. How long will it stay on? Should I go to the mechanic just to be safe even though my car is running fine?: the car's computer checks for evap system leaks every ignition cycle. once it finds a problem and sets a code (check engine light on), you must fix the problem. once the problem is fixed, the computer will reset on it's own after a certain number of ignition cycles so long as it doesn't still detect a leak. if it doesn't shut off, after a day or two, take it to your local auto parts store and have the computer scanned. if the light was a result of a loose cap, the code should be something like; large evap system leak detected, or small evap system leak detected. if it's something related to the evap system, have them clear the codes and watch for the check engine light for the next few days. if it's not evap system related, then i recommend taking it to a trusted auto service center. (auto parts stores like o'reilly auto parts, advance auto parts, etc. will scan it for free by the way) good luck!

Q: m airbag and service light are stck on even tho i hav checked and tried everythi to get them off: Well if it's a 1995 or newer,there's a plug under the dash that you can go to any auto zone or place like it and their analyzer can shut the lights off but if there's a problem,they will come back on fairly quick.I bought a analyzer for $69.I have used it 100's of times!! ps.SOMETIMES,disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes or so will reset the system.Good Luck. Try the battery disconnect.But if theirs A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR BAG SYSTEM,It wont go off.But I think the battery diss. is best right now.But it sounds like there's a problem with the airbag system.
