- Q: Recently my front brakes locked up on a motorcycle. I was told that the front brakes caliper needed to be replaced. The brakes stay closed and will not release. The fluid is correct. Is it better to replace the caliper or rebuild it? It is the kind of brakes with pads.
- The caliper just needs a good clean out. Remove it from the wheel and spray with brake cleaner. The pistons are covered with crud and won't retract. And all brakes have pads or shoes.
- Q: I am trying to get my motorcycle license, and need to take the drivers test on my 90cc honda trail bike. It doesn‘t have turn signals, but does have the rest of the necessary lighting. Are these required or are hand signals sufficient?
- In order to take the drivers test on that bike it would have to be street legal. Display a current tag and inspection stick (if inspection is required in your state). In order to be considered road worthy all motorcycles made since 1965 have had to have turnsignals on them from the factory, to be considered streetable. You may be able to mount a set but even used it will cost at least $100 for the signals, signal relay, handlebar switch etc. Then if you are not mechanically inclined enough, you will have to pay someone to install the system for you, costing more money. Better to borrow a friends legally licensed motorcycle to take the test on.
- Q: What is the drum brake ah there is no detailed description of the motorcycle knowledge site can tell me
- Simply put, the drum brake is the use of brake drums within the static brake pads, to friction with the wheel rotation of the brake drum to produce friction to reduce the wheel speed of the brake device.
- Q: the motorcycle will not decrease speed by gentle application of brakes, I have to floor the rear brakes and grab the front brake calliper.is there something wrong with my brakes?
- I agree that Philip's down home wisdom is astounding, but Choppy made a very good point. Some older bikes needed an Arnold Swartzenegger type grip to stop. An older bike with a single front disc is going to need more grip than a double disc and an older, single piston double disc will most likely need more than a modern, multi-piston double disc setup. Sometimes brake shoes or pads will become glazed, especially when they have been used lightly for long periods of time. Once glazed, it takes tremendous pressure to get them to stop. The best thing to do is to remove them and use sandpaper to rough them up for better grip. there's also a big difference between pad material, especially in wet conditions. I've had pads that worked great when dry but in wet weather I could have dragged my feet and gotten stopped sooner. Old Honda front disc setups had the caliper mounted on a hinged affair that needed to be adjusted correctly. Old hoses on disc brakes get spongy with age and no amount of bleeding will firm them up. If you can mash the brake lever against the handgrip, you either have air in the system or the hoses should be replaced. On rear drum brakes, the problem can be as simple as the rod between the lever and brake needing adjustment. On rear disc setups, you may need to adjust the lever to that it sets higher and you don't have to bend your foot downward so far. Hose swelling on rear discs usually isn't as big of a deal because you normally have much less hose length compared to the front. Can you lock up your rear brake? If not, then you certainly do have a problem.
- Q: I have a 2006 CBR RR 1000 motorcycle whose brake lights will not come on. I purchased the upper brake switch but have not not put it on yet. I am hesitant as the brake light don‘t work with the foot brake either. HELP!
- Get a voltmeter and check the light assembly and wiring first. EDIT - I think it may be wired up the wrong way round. To check, if you turn the lights off and press the brake does it light up? If so you need to swap around the wires.
- Q: Is there an online manual for motorcycle repairs?
- A b-737 has two turbofan engines. They take air in at the front of the engine by the large ducted fans and force this back to the compressor section of engine. The engine your referring to in the tail section is the APU. This is a small turbine engine to provide electrical power and bleed air for the Air cycle machine. The cabin air is actually air that is extracted from the compressor stage of the turbofan engine. this air is reffered to as Bleed Air and comes of the N2 stage of the compressor. This air is under very high pressure and very hot. This air is routed usually through the fuel tanks to keep the fuel warm at high altitudes, and in some aircrafts through the leading edge of the wing to provide for a hot wing anti ice system. This hot air is feed into an Air Cycle machine that can provide heat and or A/c for the aircraft by either blowing air over the hot pipes of the bleed air, or letting the hot pressuried air to expand, thus have adiabatic cooling that will cool the aircarft down. This air also is under pressure so it provides the pressuriaztion for the aircraft when flying at altiutude, and the pressure is controled by the outflow valve in the tail section of the aircraft.
- Q: While I ride my Kawasaki Vulcan 800 down the street, I hear a continous grinding sound coming from the front disk brake of the bike. The sound becomes faster as I speed up.As I pull over to take a look, I see that the front brake pad seems to touch the disk. There is no space gap. I don‘t know what to do. The disk doesn‘t seem bent or anything, except that I see a black mark along the edge of the disk that goes half way.
- Chances are that the piston is a bit dirty and not retracting. The caliper could be dirty as well. Either one holds the pad up against the disc with light pressure, with just enough drag to make noise. Time to pull the caliper and do some cleaning.
- Q: I've never ridden a motorcycle / driven a manual car, and i've got a few questions. I'm going to take an MSF course before I get my license, so don't be all noob.1) When stopped, is it ok to leave the clutch in and be in 1st gear or must you shift to neutral to not burn out the clutch?2) In an automatic car, I can be at a stop sign in drive with just the brake pushed in. I'm guessing you can't do that with manual in 1st?3) I've heard that when shiftings from N to 1st, you have to let out the clutch slowly, so how slow does this have to be compared to just dropping the clutch? Finally, what can I do to amuse myself before I can get my license? (I'm 15). I'm totally obsessed with motorcycles and I can't wait any longer!!Thanks!
- 1) the clutch will definitly not burn out when the clucth is in it will not move no matter if ur in gear or not. soo stop in what ever gear u like and pull in the clutch and it will continue to run and ur clutch will be just fine!!! just shift down to first when u want to go soo it dosent bog and quit 2)in a manual car u have to push in the brake and the clutch dosent matter what gear ur in in a car or bike but again shift to first or secound when starting to accelerate again to keep from bogging these are the same for a dirt bike and a street bike. 3)no u heard that when u want to start driving in first u let the clutch out slowly and u do until ur confortable with it listen to the bike if it sounds like the engine is screaming DONT LET THE CLUTCH OUT but idle it calmly and keep the gas kinda coming in short little flicks of the throttle until u start giting speed up then u can just drive but always keep ur hand on the clutch. finally iam 17 and iam totally obssed with motorcycles i have a old kx 80 a 125 dr-z(my old bikes) 2 DR-Z 400's a 2004 GSXR 1000 limited edition and my pride and joy an RM-z 250 2006 which i race Hope this helped. Good luck with the bike ( oh in the meantime play some drums there soo much fun)
- Q: is it difficult to switch gears on motorcylce.i suck at manual cars.swithcing gears i use automatic/standard
- Changing gears on a motorcycle is easy. The left foot controls the shifter. Pull up with your foot to shift up. Push down to shift down. The left hand controls the clutch. If you really are bad at manuals then you should buy a motorcycle with an automatic. Currently only honda and aprilla make a model with an automatic. However, all scooters are automatic and they come in all sizes. If you want to do long distance riding, suzuki makes a nice one.
