I just want a clean sweepable surface.: The pros are that it keeps the dirt out, the cons are that you have to keep the maintenance up to it. You need to etch the floor first with Hydrochloric Acid to key the paint to the concrete, because its a basement you need to prime the concrete with Zinnser Water-Tite sealer which keeps the damp out, then you can overcoat the sealer with two coats of single pack paving paint, the same as what you might use on the verandah of your home. Lowes normally have all the supplies for a job like this.

Thanks!: wood laminate floors have a factory seal of polyurethane. soaps and cleaners with ammonia react to the laminate by softening and therefore discoloring the seal. Clean the floors with a small amount of vinegar and water.(4 capfuls to a gallon of water). there is a new product out called PERGO that is designed for poly laminated wood floors. use with a micro-fiber mop head. works really well..good luck...

I understand your question very well, I also am on a budget, and I solved the same problem....temporarely. I assume you have plywood floor? I sanded mine, and then I painted it, and when the paint was dry I put a nice rug over it. This looked real good, and lasted for about 2 years, after that I had enough money saved to install a great looking wood floor. I bought the real McCoy through my local buy and sell and paid for about 400 sq 65.00 dollars. And the bonus was that I didn't have to rip anything apart when it was time to have the new Floor installed. By the way I still use the same rug. Perhaps this will help you. Good luck.
