- Mine has been nailed down 40 years now and not a nail pop is showing on a sheet of vinyl.. What is done these days is you can buy 1/4 inch plywood sheets (I like plywood over PDF) and use a screw gun and put down another sub-floor. using floor screws and make sure they are sunken slightly. Yes that means a lot of wood again. OR SOME of the nails are causing you grief. You can grind off the heads with an angle grinder(or pull those useless nails.as they are doing nothing anyways). They won't be a problem as they were not holding the floor down anyways. You may want to nail in another nail. In that case make sure it is Longer than what you pulled out. A 2 1/2 to3 galvanized nail and pound it down so the head is below the surface some(like a dimple) When new floor is laid down you use glue and that fills the dimples in the floor. The problem stems from floor joist spacing is too great so there is a great flex when one walks on the floor. If the floor joists are spaced far apart then the floor plywood needs to be thicker to keep the flexing to a minimum. You got wide joist spacing and minimal T&G plywood thickness. The nails can only come up because of the weight placed on the floor in the middle(between the joists) is like a claw hammer pulling nails. If you have forced air heating it is easy to see how thick the floor is because most vents are placed in the floor under a window. Take off the grate and try to see past the metal of the heating duct to see how thick the plywood is. Each layer in plywood is 1/8 In my jurisdiction , 5/8 is the minimum floor thickness of the plywood.. I lay ceramic or slate or granite floor tile. Regulation for that is 1 thick So 5/8+3/8=1inch. Then I pour a float on the floor(basically concrete) so now it is dead level and rigid. So that is an inch 1/2 thick before the 1/4 inch tile go on top.

- something to scrape the floor is about all you will need. the glue, well, scrape,scrape and then scrape some more. sanding will also work. whats under the laminate? If it is anything other than cement then you are going to have to lay cement board and if that is the case then you don't necessarily have to scrape the glue perfectly flat. you can also go to your local home depot and buy something that will soften the glue up. good luck

- Slate floors are not difficult to maintain but hard to install. Make sure you do your homework if you are installing them yourselves. They are gorgeous floors and definitely worth the money! Good luck with your project. Also check out Travertine.
- Q: The bathroom is about 6inches off from one end of the floor to the other. And that is a 4ft span. The tub is at the level end which is the lowest part of the floor. We want to leave the tub and build up the floor around it. What is the best and fastest way to do that ourselves?Our kitchen is also unlevel. The floor slants to one corner. It may be about 3 inches off level. We need to level out both floors, but have no idea how.
- First, if you have a crawl space, you may want to crawl under your house and see if any of the foundation under your house is sinking. If it is, then you have a bigger problem on your hands. If the foundation isn't sinking, then you can take up the sub-flooring and nail/bolt on floor joists onto the existing floor joists to make the floor level. As long as you nail/bolt the floor joists on the same side, the spacing should remain the same. Then just put down a new sub floor with screws or with ring shanked nails. I prefer to use screws over nails. If you add on top of the existing floor, then you may have problems at the doorway. You could put down shims then secure the new flooring to the old sub flooring, but that is not a really good way to do things.
- Q: I have linoleum floor in my kitchen and restroom, and i'm getting ready to lay down self stick tile over it as a part of the home renovation. Is there any special way I need to prepare the old floor before i stick the new tile to it?
- You need to combine all the answers but using contact cement. To expensive and to slow a drying time.. First and foremost the vinyl down now has to be down solid and cleaned of all greases and waxes.. Then 1 Use an embossing leveler, which is spread over the entire floor to ensure a smooth surface so any floor patterns don t telescope and show through.. 2..Have your lay out ready, Lines snapped etc.. 3. Spread a clear spread adhesive over a lot of the floor . Up to 1/2 the floor and let this dry clear because it ll be cloudy or a white glue and when it dries clear ( don t walk on it ) its ready to except the tiles. 4 When all done a 100# roller is recommended , GL
