- Q:My wife and I have a 5' X 7' area rug which we want to dye brown. It's a deep pile wool rug and the fibers are dense. How does one go about this? We would have it done professionally but there are no skilled people where we live. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- A rug with geometric motifs or pattern would be best to emphasize the straight lines found in the rest of the room... adding more straight lines in the rug would do so by repetition, and circles would accomplish the same but by contrasting against your straight lines instead. Look for a rug with beiges, browns, rusts, golds, and maybe some grey-blue or grey-green just to add some additional interest.

- Several things can cause a carpet to stink after cleaning. If the smell is sour it probably means that too much water was put in the carpet and not suctioned back out of the carpet and pad. The water will start to sour and make the carpet sour. Steam cleaning by a professional cleaner can help. They use steam to clean the carpet and then remove the excess water. They may also have to deodorize. I had this problem about three years ago and I rented the Rug Doctor and cleaned the carpet and went over it several times with the vacuum portion of the rug doctor to remove the water. Then I put our shop vac on reverse and pushed the nozzle through a small section that I pulled up from the wall. I let the shop vac blow under the carpet for several hours. Last year I pulled up the carpet and replaced it all with hardwood floors! Good luck, I hope this helped.

- Carpet prices vary widely as does quality. But you can get a mid grade carpet and pad to cover any warranties for around 3$ a s/f installed. Of course you can get a better carpet ( and cheaper ) but you generally get what you pay for.. Don t down grade pad since this is the back bone of any carpet..If any thing this is one place to up grade to what you can afford. GL

Any place you buy a new rug should also be able to sell you a pad to go under it. Just make sure it's a rubbery pad and not just the foam cushion that goes under wall-to-wall carpet.
