Many rugs have a cat surface such that they have a different shade looking from the two ends. So look for that if the rug has it or not. The two shades can be dramatically different. This is especially true for hand-knotted rugs, which you are not buying now but maybe in future. IKEA and JCPenney would be good. Discount flooring stores may have a bigger selection. Macy's and furniture stores nylon is the best for easy maintenance. Look for the size and the lenght of the fibers - when you bend a corner down towards the underside, the rolled edge should have a fairly thick set of fibers sticking out - if not the rug will not hold up under traffic. You can learn more about rugs on these website. A decent nylon rug with a spot-hiding pattern usually will last for as long as your upholstered furniture.

If the rug sticks out into the room too much, put part of it under the sofa. That's all I know to tell you without seeing the room or the furniture. You could try the rug at angles, but I'm not sure that would work without knowing how the room is set up.

The trouble is they use these giant stapkes that are half in the room and half under the walls. Heres what to do... 1) using a razor knife and lots and lots of blades cut the carpet as best as you can right next to the walls around the room. 2) Remove the carpet and pad from the room. 3) Using a 45 degree angle grinder with the thin discs that cut metal... under cut the staples that are holding down whats left of the carpet and pad. 4) You will find that they were not stingy with these staples with the pad seams either. use the grider on them also. A full double wide will usually take about 10 grinder discs to get it done.
