Q: Should I buy a refurbished rug doctor?Or what is a cheaper really good carpet shampooer I can buy for the carpets in my apartment. I have some traffic in my apartment. Mostly from me and my pets. And the occasional pet accidents.: It might cost more than the Bissell or Hoover but thats because it works better and lasts longer. I've borrowed my parents brand new Bissell and it doesn't clean anywhere near as well as the Rug Doctor rentals. I have 2 jack russell's so I need to clean up stains frequently. The refurbished machines on the rugdoctor site are blue, not red so they are not pulled from the rental stores. They're probably returns or overstock from Costco or WalMart so I would trust them to be reliable and not used much. They don't cost much more than a Bissel or Hoover so I think its worth it to buy the highest quality machine. Even if its a hundred bucks more, it will last forever where most other machines seem to break after 2 years. The refurbished machines also have a 5 year warranty just like the brand new Rug Doctors. Buying a refurbished machine is probably a great way to save some cash on a machine that usually runs $500-600 and I trust the brand all day long.

Q: Will a carpeted floor crack in the sun?: If the floor before the pavement moisture content is well controlled, enough dry, and then sun will not crack.

Q: I have a smallish (3ft by 5ft) area rug that needs to be cleaned. It's not worth enough to pay a cleaner and I have hardwood floors so I'm not trying to rent a steam cleaner. I was thinking about using a clothes line between two trees and hosing it down real well with a pressurized garden hose... I have tried vacuuming and quot;beatingquot; the rug with a stick, but there is a dingy coloration that I think needs water/washing to get it looking nice. I wasn't going to use any detergents, just water and a scrub brush then let it air dry for a day or so. Does this seem like at least a semi-good idea? Thanks!: The clothesline and garden hose method is what I do with small area rugs. If you have any way of soaking it with a carpet cleaning solution first, that helps a lot. There are garden sprayers which can do that quite well. Don't use a detergent, or any cleaner that makes suds. It's too hard to get all of it out and any remants will tend to attract dirt when they are dry. Even windex would be better than nothing. Try to do it on a day when it'll be warm and dry for long enough to get the rug at least mostly dry before you bring it indoors.

Q: I am about to buy new carpeting for the family room. The current carpeting is pretty regular carpet, although I don't know what the technical details are. The problem is that my son gets so upset because his toy cars and trains don't roll very well on the carpet and he tends to try to put them on tables, etc. or the hardwood. The cars, etc. do pretty well on the area rug, which isn't too thick. I need suggestions for the type of carpeting to buy that would allow cars and such to roll. Is it looped carpet? Q: We used a black light on our carpet last night and found black spots. When we turned on the lights we didn't see the spots. What stains turn black under black light?: Protein stains, such as urine, blood, semen, will glow with a whitish tint. I've checked a thousand carpets with a black light,in total darkness, mainly to assess the extent of urine contamination so a decision can be made to either treat the stains or tear the carpet and pad out. I have never come across black stains as you describe them. In any case, even after extensive hot water extraction cleaning, the glow will remain. In your case, whatever caused the spots you see is probably long gone from the carpet, just the residual effect remains, which is permanent.

Q: I have a stain on my carpet. It's from tanning lotion cream. The carpet is beige, and wool. Is there any way I could get this out?: You have to be careful with wool, a lot of products that can clean carpet can also damage it (though typically, good wool carpeting is very cleanable compared to the synthetics or cheaper wool). The solution is dependent upon the stain and color of the stain. Your best bet would be to have it professionally cleaned using hot water extraction (aka - steam cleaned), by a reputable carpet cleaner. By reputable, I don't mean one of the large corporately owned companies, as they seem to nearly always do a horrible job. They're very in-and-out trying to make a quick buck, though they may be cheaper. They should be using chemicals to clean the carpet, and have the proper knowledge and know how to diagnose the stain and then remove it. Even if the stain cannot be removed, a good carpet restoration person can dye it back to, or very nearly to, its original color easily. We do this all the time on all colors of carpet. Without seeing the stain, its hard to tell you what exactly might work. Also, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, and you try it yourself, you could actually make the stain worse, or set it in for good. Might be able to tell you more if there was a picture to see the stain though. Anytime you spill something on your carpet that you know is likely to leave a stain, the best thing you can do is put water on it, and just keep it wet until you can have it cleaned, preferably as soon as possible.

Q: My husband and I just moved into yet another rental. The carpet is decent; it's a little stained, but VERY worn in high traffic areas.
