- I was benching 175 lbs at a bodyweight of 140 lbs when I last tried maxing out. Same Height As You. I don't do any real powerlifting, I'm more into Natural Bodybuilding. The only experience I had was doing pushups but I did them in a slow controlled fashion where I used no momentum and it made it extremely difficult for me to even push out 11 reps, this really breaks down the muscles a lot more than fast pushups and you will feel it the next day. If pushups aren't your thing then you can just work with what you can do on the bench, there are no bad starting points. When I train someone I always tell them I don't care if you do 3 reps or 300 reps, the only thing I'm looking for is good form and the pain in your face that tells me you're working hard.
